I’ve just spent a fair amount of time updating the games. I noticed that new scores were being logged to the database, but no scores were showing on the top-score screen. After a bit of debugging and detective work I was able to track down the main problems and fix them, so the games once again show top-ten scores. Some of the top scores are rather amazing: a user scored 10,380,272 points in the Flash Key Signatures game on May 9, 2018! The top score in Flash Notes is 1,065,311, recorded on December 17, 2017! I’ve recently become intrigued by the possibilities of musical coding – using programming as a tool for teaching basic programming skills and musical concepts at the same time. Sonic Pi is a programming environment developed by Dr. Sam Aaron at Cambridge University. He has worked closely with educators to develop a system that is both easy to learn and a lot of fun to use. To get started, I’ve been developing a basic course consisting of “coding challenges” which walk through some really basic features of programming and the Sonic Pi environment.
