If You Had Dinner With a Multimillionaire, What Advice Would they Give You?
Early To Rise - Health, Wealth and a Life Well Lived

At least once a week, someone I hardly know invites me to dinner. Most of these invitations come from people who used to read my Michael Masterson essays on entrepreneurship in Early to Rise or my books on business and marketing for John Wiley & Sons. I always demur. I demur because (a) I don’t have much spare time, (b) I don’t need any more friends, and (c) I’m pretty sure that what they really want is a free consultation. But last month, I got a different sort of invitation. It was from a guy who had been, in fact, an avid and enthusiastic consumer of my ideas. But he was a city gov ..read more

My client Kristen was frustrated. She was running into a common problem that I hear about every day, and it’s probably something you’ve dealt with, too “Craig,” she said, “I try my best to hang around positive people and spend time with coaches and mentors, but there always seems to be a get-together with negative people who just want to argue about sports and politics. Worse, I have an in-law who just talks my ear off with gossip. What do I do?” Outside of joining a monastery, there’s not much you can do to COMPLETELY avoid negativity. Every ETR reader is going to get in the odd conversation ..read more

In the next 21 days, make a comittment to this habit change challenge. Every year my friend Jimmy sends me this poem. Who Am I? Author Unknown I am your constant companion. I am your greatest helper or heaviest burden. I will push you onward or drag you down to failure. I am completely at your command. Half the things you do might just as well be turned over to me and I will be able to do them quickly and correctly. I am easily managed— you must merely be firm with me. Show me exactly how you want something done and after a few lessons I will do it automatically. I am the servant of all great ..read more

In 2019 I saw Ed Mylett give a speech that changed my life. Ed said that when he thinks about death, he envisions himself meeting God for the first time. “Ed here is the man I designed you to be,” God will say to Ed, “This was the man, husband, father, and businessman you had the full potential to become. But here’s who you actually became.” Ed started crying on stage during this story and said that’s one of his biggest motivators. To reach his full potential and become the best version of himself. I’ll never forget that speech. It changed me.  There are a lot of factors into reaching you ..read more

A client told me… “Craig, I’ve been trying to convince my husband to take his health seriously. Nothing I’ve said has gotten through to him.” My reply: Regarding hubby’s health… If we look at the problem with my “discipline through subtraction” approach… What are the 3 biggest health sins he’s committing against his body? Start there… cutting back or eliminating, and then not worry about the 100 other things he could do to improve.  Just remove the things that have the greatest catastrophic consequences. One other thing… he needs to do an exec physical like the one I just did… It’s a comp ..read more

Accountability Matters

In 2006 I started hiring coaches. I did about 80% of what they said… And I got some decent results because of it. But for some reason I wasn’t going as hard as possible with the advice I was given. It wasn’t until I met Bedros Keuilian in 2009 and joined his Mastermind that I finally gave my coach everything I had. The reason… I looked up to Bedros like a big brother. I didn’t want to disappoint him… I didn’t want to fail him and get the Armenian Death Stare.  Accountability to Bedros changed my life… help me overcome my introverted ways… stopped me from taking the path of least resistan ..read more

When it comes to personal productivity, we all have the chance to have good days or bad days. Good days are those that leave you feeling good because you have accomplished your most important tasks. Bad days are those that leave you feeling bad because you have failed to do anything to advance your most important goals. If you want to have a better life, you must fill it with good days. The best way to do that is to organize your day according to your personal priorities – doing the most important things first. It’s easy to do. Yet most people don’t. Eighty percent of the people I know – and I ..read more

Dealing with Criticism

One Monday morning, as I finished my breakfast, I overheard an interesting conversation on the radio between the co-hosts… Female Co-Host: Oprah’s in Toronto this week filming her show, but I guess you’re not a big fan? Male Co-Host: Ugh, Oprah. Can’t stand her. Actually, I guess she’s not so bad now. Female: Why don’t you mind her now? Male: Well, I heard she’s struggling… ***** Can you believe that? The radio announcer’s reason for not hating Oprah anymore is because she’s struggling. Everyone’s a critic and there’s no shortage of people willing to take pleasure in your struggles (the German ..read more
