“It appears there was four unique tornadoes, and there’s tens of thousands of trees down all over Bentonville,” said Ethan Edman, Director of Construction and Maintenance for the Trailblazers. The four tornadoes hit shortly after midnight on Sunday, May 26th, 2024, when a supercell moved into Arkansas from Oklahoma, wreaking havoc across the region. As he explained the scale of the destruction, Uriah Nazario, Director of Soft-Surface Trails for the Trailblazers, said “we have thousands of tons of debris to remove on miles and miles of trails. It will take an army, and that is exactly what we ..read more

Photo: Marcus Gracia Hannah Otto recently became the fastest known woman to ride the 137-mile-long Kokopelli’s trail from Moab, Utah to Loma, Colorado, besting the previous fastest known time by over an hour. In addition to racing gravel and mountain bikes, she’s also a certified athletic trainer.  How do you feel now that you can finally talk about your accomplishment? Were you worried someone else would make an FKT attempt between then and now? In October you made your first attempt, but it didn’t work out. What happened. What did you do differently the second time around? What was you ..read more

The new Ibis Ripley and Ripmo share the same frame [Review]
Singletracks | Mountain Bike News

After retiring a legion of fancy electric clippers that promised everything from fewer shaves to youthful looks, I’ve finally landed on the basic safety razor. Something about “what’s not broken…”?     Similarly, what the fork more could ya need than a 130/140mm mountain bike for most trails? You don’t have to choose with the new Ibis Ripley and Ripmo. Both models use the same frame, swapping clevis, fork, and shock to bump a Ripley up from 140mm front and 130mm rear to the Ripmo’s 160/150mm stature. Both bikes can also take a dual 29er or mixed-wheel configuration, as you ..read more

Photo courtesy Arkansas State Parks Department The 155-page environmental assessment (EA) document for the ambitious Trails at Mena project has just been published, and consequently, the 30-day comment period is now open. After reviewing the high-level document details, it appears that the proposed action from the US Forest Service (USFS) is essentially identical to the plan I reported on back in May. Be sure to read that article for more context, but in brief, the Trails at Mena plan includes issuing a Special Use Permit (SUP) to the Arkansas State Parks Department for 8,832 acres of the Ouac ..read more

Why can’t anyone agree on MTB trail difficulty ratings?
Singletracks | Mountain Bike News

In a perfect world, every trail would be signed as well as this one. Photo: Greg Heil I can’t tell you how many times I’ve finished a ride with friends, cracked a cold one, and then proceeded to analyze the new trail that we’d just ridden. Inevitably, the conversation turns to technical difficulty. “Is that really a double black trail? All of the difficult features had easy ride-arounds. I think a double black has to have mandatory features,” one person would quip. On a different trail, “that trail was rated a black, but it only had one black section in it, and 99% of the trail wasn’t a black ..read more

Does your local area have the right number of e-bike-legal MTB trails?
Singletracks | Mountain Bike News
by Greg Heil

E-bike trail access is inconsistent not just across the nation, but even from trail-to-trail in the same region. Singletracks has reported diligently on changes in e-bike laws around the nation, but there still isn’t a blanket acceptance of e-bikes on the trails in the USA. Furthermore, plenty of riders don’t want to see e-bikes on their local mountain bike trails. Despite years of debate, the issue remains contentious. We’re curious to know if you think your local area has the right amount of e-bike-legal MTB trails. Please enable JavaScript in your browser to complete this form. Does your l ..read more

These Pearl Izumi shorts have holes in them, but you should buy a pair anyway
Singletracks | Mountain Bike News

If you haven’t purchased a pair of mountain bike shorts in the last few years, you might not realize that today’s mountain bike shorts are full of holes. Laser-cut holes, to be precise, and they’re designed to provide just the right amount of ventilation when you’re flying down the trail on your mountain bike this summer. Pearl Izumi has a couple different pairs of men’s mountain bike shorts with laser-cut holes in them that are on sale right now for as low as $36.75. The holes make an appearance on at least one Pearl Izumi jersey too; the Summit short sleeve is currently just $24. Holey mole ..read more
