Finding Your Happy Place This is another article that I wrote for CameraCraft magazine and it was therefore written mainly with a professional photographers audience in mind.  However, I’ve included it here on my blog just to give potential clients a brief idea of our history and how we came to be working exclusively in product photography.  It also gives me a space to show just a few of my non-product ‘just for fun’ images!  Here’s the article I was recently asked to complete a questionnaire for my children’s secondary school.  One question that stood out for me was w ..read more

The Power To Change Our World The world is a very large place. The human population that live upon its surface are so small in comparison to their environment.  However, it is becoming more and more obvious that these small creatures make a significant difference to the climate and environment around them.  The natural order has been in place for millions of years and is astoundingly self-regulating… but things are changing.  Our everyday lives are full of decisions that maybe causing irreparable damage to the planet that we live upon. Natural circles – The Dairy Crown One of the aspect of photography we specialise in is Still Life imagery.  In the world of product commercial photography it is perhaps the least utilise genre and therefore tends to be something we do in ‘spare time’ in the studio or for competition shoots.  Why do we continue to shoot this genre when commercial need is low, will simply because it’s fun and always produces some interesting results.  Here Ian explains how we captured some Dairy Crowns – messy, at times frustrating but great fun with minimal equipment needed and a unique result ..read more

Making the Unreal a Reality In my world of product and commercial photography there are two very distinct styles of images; there are those that need to accurately portray a product and those that need to grab the viewers attention whilst also including a product.  It if common to utilise similar lighting techniques in both of these styles, however, the major difference is in the approach and overall concept of the image. An imaginative approach to an advertising image allows us to take a very definite step away from reality whilst still incorporating easily recognisable items.   ..read more

When Size Actually Matters Hello, this article on the importance of product sizing was written by Ian for the March/April 2021 edition of CameraCraft magazine.  It explores the different ways scale can be used in packshot images and e-commerce presentation. Our brains really are very clever things.  They take in information around them, in this case from our eyes, and they process it at lightning fast speeds and create a picture of the world around us.  Part of this processing relies on the correct interpretation of the scale of objects relative to each other.  The beaut ..read more

Cameracraft Magazine Article – January/February 2021 Hello, this is an article Ian wrote for the January/February 2021 edition of CameraCraft magazine.  It is a slight departure from previous articles looking at post production work and how to fix branding problems in composite images. All digital images contain noise, it’s a fact.  If you listen to camera manufacturers hype about new models, then there is nearly always claims about reduced noise.  This leads most people to think that having no noise in an image is the best thing… but this is not necessarily the case.  W ..read more

Cameracraft Magazine Article – November/December 2020 Hello, this is an article Ian wrote for the November/December 2020 edition of CameraCraft magazine.  It explores the impact of the background:  White-ground or black-ground?  It’s a grey area…. Whiteground or Blackground Winter is nearly upon us and we’re faced with the stark contrast between extremes.   We endure dark nights that come early and are bitterly cold.   This is balanced, sometimes, with beautifully bright, crisp, clear sunny days during which we’re blinded by sunlight reflected from a pristine snowy w ..read more
