Luxembourg Copyright Case Against Jeff Dieschburg

Google translated screenshot from Tageblatt.lu. I won. I won my appeal. The Luxembourg court has ruled that Jeff Dieschburg infringed upon my copyright when he used my work without consent. Using a different medium was irrelevant. My work being 'available online' was irrelevant. Consent was necessary. This win means a lot—not just for me but also for artists and photographers everywhere. It’s a reminder that copyright protects individuals from those that try to profit off our work without consent. It reaffirms that our work being online doesn't mean we give up our rights. For 2 years I’ve bee ..read more

Lee Sedol, Art, & Go

Google’s interview with Lee Sedol: 8 years later: A world Go champion’s reflections on AlphaGo 8 years ago, Google Deepmind created AlphaGo—an AI that defeated the best human Go player in the world, and it shaped a lot of how I think of art and AI. In a new interview, Lee Sedol says that he wouldn't become a professional again if he had known of what an AI like AlphaGo can do today. This is so heartbreaking, I still can’t quite find the right words to describe how I feel. So I thought I’d write a little about Go and the Lee Sedol I knew.   Go board and stones shot on a Lytro camera ..read more

The Future of AI Art and Automation in Creative Industries

I’m building Cara, a new platform for artists. As we near 6k signups on the waitlist, I want to be transparent about my thoughts on AI, and why I want this to be more than just an alternative art platform. I’ve anticipated losing my job to AI for 6 years now. I expected style replication and high quality generative art to be accessible by 2021. I’m a year off, but I think it’s close enough. So I want to share what I think is next based on ML milestones and behind-the-scenes/B2B tech available to games, photography, and movie productions. My estimates for the near future— Once AI art’s ethical ..read more

My Experiences in Fashion

Swan.   After my post on quitting fashion, Vogue Singapore reached out to me to pen an essay about my time in the industry. I got to talk about my experiences as an Asian female fashion photographer and my hopes for the future. The article is now out in the May/June issue and also on their website. Because I went way over the word limit, the final published piece has been edited for length. I put down a lot of things I will probably never be able to make myself say again, so I wanted to share the full length original here. — I fell into fashion by chance. As a child, I grew up lov ..read more

Makeup look for camera test   I’ve been thinking about getting a medium format mirrorless camera and did some tests this past weekend with the Hasselblad and Fuji. Didn’t have any models so I did a makeup test and made a bunch of self portraits. Posted this selfie on my Instagram story, and received this comment which was honestly heartbreaking:     I’ve been thinking about this for a while now as I moonlight on a beauty creator account, but since I’m not a beauty creator on my main profile, I didn’t think I really had to say this for my audience. It’s sad to see this from one ..read more

New work with the stunning Emily Mei in Nusi Quero. For my new photobook (maybe!). Someone cast this girl as Tifa ? . I’ve been taking it slow after everything last year. Needed some time to collect myself and figure out what’s next. Blink and it’s already 2022, so happy belated new year! I want to focus on taking care of my health and the photobook this year. Almost recovered from my op now and have an autoimmune screening in March. Still want to do a magazine, but I can only do one thing at a time for now. Will try to exercise less self-loathing and worry less about my aesthetics not suit ..read more

Quitting Fashion, My Story

I decided to quit fashion so it’s probably fine to share this now. Some years ago I went to a portfolio review and had an encounter with an editor from a prestigious magazine. I don’t remember the exact words but the gist of it was like: “I’m sure this aesthetic—*gestures at my covers*—works back where you’re from. But these perfect brows, black hair, red lips—it’s just too much. It’s wrong for the western market.” I really appreciated them being candid and honest. But I was also like. Have you fucking seen me? Black hair red lips perfect brows. Just tell me my taste sucks or m ..read more
