I don't think I'm the only one. I think we've all bought stuff during Covid that we might not otherwise have bought. Right? Please say you agree with me. Whether it's been boredom, picking up a new hobby, a new found enthusiasm for DIY, splurging on something to make yourself feel good, or using some money saved because you no longer have commuting-to-work costs. I think I've purchased things in the last few months that fall into all of those categories.
A number of things really have had a positive impact on my day-to-day life (even in some small way), and I want to share a few of them here w ..read more

I hosted the first Live Q&A chat session on the site today. I would say it was a success, and went just as I might have expected it to. I invited a very limited number of people to attend. I wanted to ensure it was easy to focus on the questions as they were coming in, and be able to give everyone some time to ask questions. It lasted a little longer than I expected, slightly more than an hour, and thankfully went smoothly with no technical issues
There were a total of 4 participants, 5 in fact, but one chose to remain silent, and emailed me a couple of questions afterwards.
We talked ..read more

Over the past number of years I have helped many readers who come to this site to find the best possible currency exchange deal available to them. Moving money internationally is somewhat of a stressful experience. Naturally, everybody wants to get the best rate available, and pay the least amount in exchange fees. This is especially true for many of you, as there are often large sums of money involved when relocating to Ireland on a permanent or semi-permanent basis.
I encourage you to explore all your options with respect to currency exchange. There certainly are savings to be made if you go ..read more

The week of Oct 19 2020 brought about the announcement of another major lockdown for Irish society. Ireland is in affect at 'Level 5' which according to Citizens Information means:
Level 5 means that you are asked to stay at home, with the exception of exercise within 5 kilometres of your home. There will be no social or family gatherings. You can meet with 1 other household in an outdoor setting which is not a home or garden, such as a park, including for exercise.
Only essential workers can travel to work and only essential retail and essential services can remain open. Construction and man ..read more

Came across an interesting, useful video on YouTube earlier. It's a presentation by the Consulate General of Ireland in San Francisco, detailing the step by step instructions you need to follow to obtain citizenship of Ireland through a Foreign Birth Registration. I'm going to embed the video below, but if they change the settings on it for any reasons, I'll also include the direct link to it, just below that.

Moving back to Ireland from abroad? You’ll now find lots of helpful information on returning to Ireland at citizensinformation.ie. From looking for somewhere to live, to finding out about enrolling your children in school, this new resource is a great place to start planning your journey home.
If you are moving back, you’re in good company, as the CSO estimates that over 135,000 Irish people have returned to Ireland since 2015. In 2018, the number of returnees (23,400) even surpassed the number of Irish people leaving the country (23,300). This wave of return is certainly not the first to happ ..read more

This is the 3rd issue in the consultation call summary series. Another very productive call, and I believe another very satisfied client.
I think I said it after the last summary write up, I am really enjoying helping out my clients on these calls. It allows me connect with you in a far more productive manner than by email or on the forum. I love the whole process of prep'ing in advance of the call, jotting down notes while on the call for follow-ups, and chasing down information that I didn't have in advance of the call. There's always something to be learned, and I appreciate those of you p ..read more

Last week I took a call from a gentleman from the US, moving to Ireland in the new year with his German wife. As a non-EEA citizen, he can apply to live in Ireland based on the fact that he has an EU citizen wife.
It was a very interesting conversation, one in which I think I learned as much from him as he did from me.
We covered so many different things related to his move, including:
Kids and school
Moving cats to Ireland
Rental options and requirements
Currency transfer
Obtaining a mortgage
Residence Card Form EUTR1
Health insurance in Ireland
Car insurance options
This was a call I perso ..read more

This week I had the pleasure of speaking with a lady from California about her upcoming move to Ireland. This client of mine is almost certain that she will move to Ireland in the coming months. Her dual citizenship makes that a whole lot easier than for many others, but she did have a list of questions that I was able to provide answers to, that will be of interest to many other readers.
These are the topics we covered:
Opening a bank account from overseas
Broadband coverage in rural Ireland
Receiving US Social Security payments in Ireland
Currency transfer
Shipping of personal goods

Both the Irish and British governments have published information on what the implications may be to pet movement from/to the UK post Brexit.
Because there is so much uncertainty surrounding Brexit still (late 2019), I would guess that we just have to wait and see how things pan out over the coming months and years, and pay close attention to the rules for this topic as they are adjusted. There are bound to be changes. For now, it appears as though little will change. The material from the Dept of Agriculture indicates that "pet travel rules for entry into the UK may not change for some time ..read more
