Oban, Scotland

“Oban, Scotland” — An elevated view of central Oban, Scotland, from near McCaig’s Tower. Judging from our brief 2-night stay in this Scottish town, Oban is a charming place. It sits right on the waterfront and, from what I could see, mostly lines the shoreline and nearby hills. My impression is that the town is largely connected to three things: tourism, water-related industry (ferries, tours, and fishing), and whisky. (The well-known and highly-regarded Oban Distillery is right in town). Because we were there before the prime summer season the impact of tourists was perhaps less than it might ..read more

At Arthur’s Seat

“At Arthur’s Seat” — Hikers rest and enjoy the view at Arthur’s Seat, Edinburgh, Scotland. I did not plan to find myself on this summit in Edinburgh. Arthur’s Seat is a landmark here, the summit of a volcanic ridge that rises above the lowlands of the city. It has historical significance — perhaps you can imagine why? — and it is also in the middle of a very large park close to central Edinburgh. I made this photograph at the summit, and you can see that the climb was far from a solitary experience! More about the hike? Read on… Someone Patty knows heard we were in Edinburgh, knew that we had ..read more

Hikers, Great Glen Way

“Hikers, Great Glen Way” — Two hikers at treeline on. a foggy morning along the Great Glen Way, Scotland. This photograph comes from a section of Scotland’s Great Glen Way between Port Augustus and Invermoriston This segment includes one of the two highest points on the walk, and is also known for including the “View Catcher” structure. I made the photograph close to that actual high point, on a morning when it was trying to rain and fog was drifting around the peaks and the valley, occasionally blocking the view entirely. As we paused to make photographs — and catch our breath! — another ..read more

Portico, Univeristy of Glasgow

“Portico, University of Glasgow” — Among the stout column sand arches of a portico at the University of Glasgow. This day started with a vague plan to visit the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum and perhaps go look for some of the famous Glasgow Street Art nearby. Some times we have very clear plans and sometimes we just wing it. This was one of the latter times. We walked to the museum from downtown Glasgow, and after our visit there decided to check out the nearby campus of the University of Glasgow, where I made this photograph. Once we got close enough to the university to see its impress ..read more

Forest Trail, Great Glen Way

“Forest Trail, Great Glen Way” — A section of the Great Glen Way trail passes through forest between Fort Augustus and Invermoriston. One of the strongest impressions from our visit to Scotland in May was the color green. Lush, green growth was everywhere, at least by our California standards. Right now, with this summer’s heat in our state, those cool, damp, green days in Scotland are a very pleasant memory! This little section of the trail between Fort Augustus and Invermoriston is typical — green on the ground, dense green forest on either side, and fog and mist in the air. This day’s Great ..read more

Coffee Building

“Coffee Building” — An old, dilapidated building near the Borough Market, London. Our London lodgings in June were near the end of Blackfriars Bridge, not far from the Tote Modern Museum, the New Globe Theatre, and plenty of other interesting stuff. We were perhaps a ten minute walk from Borough Market, another favorite of ours. So one morning we headed that way for morning coffee and a bit of photography — there’s a lot of interesting stuff to see in and around the Market. As we turned up a narrow street near our destination I saw this fascinating by of dilapidated store front. Consideri ..read more

Forest, Morning Fog

“Forest, Morning Fog” — Soft sunlight appears as morning fog begins to clear above a forested hillside, Santa Cruz Mountains. One of my favorite kinds of light is found at “the edge of the light” —places that are neither in full sun nor fully shaded. Often I search out these spots, especially when fog is involved. The effect can range from subtle to quite striking when there are strong contrasts between deep shadow and light. Here there is an additional factor — not only are the foreground trees in a bit of that gentle light coming through the fog, but the more distant trees almost d ..read more

SEC Armadillo

“SEC Armadillo” — The SEC Armadillo auditorium, Glasgow, Scotland It was due to a series of more or less random circumstances that we ended up passing this fascinating building during our visit to Glasgow, Scotland. We started walking from our downtown hotel, heading generally toward the University of Glasgow, a nearby museum, and then towards an area known for, among other things, its street art. Then it was time to start back, and we spontaneously decided to follow the waterfront, and that look us past the “Armadillo” building. At the start of the waterfront section we ran into a helpful loc ..read more

Lichen-Covered Tree, Fog

“Lichen-Covered Tree, Fog” — A lichen-covered tree near at the edge of the coastal morning fog lne. Unless you have been living through our West Coast heat wave, you might not quite be able to imagine the glorious sense of relief to be standing in this spot on a recent morning. Anticipating another 100+ degree day, I got up early and drove over the mountains to the coast south of San Francisco, hoping for fog. I found it, along with temperatures as low as 55 degrees! It was almost too foggy right on the coast, believe it or not, so I drove inland a bit to find that wonderful zone at the edge o ..read more

Old Trees, Stone Fence

“Old Trees, Stone Fence” — Old trees grow against a moss-covered stone wall in the forest along the Great Glen Way, Scotland. From years of hiking in California and backpacking in the Sierra Nevada, I’m familiar with hiking in wilderness terrain. In those places the signs of human visitors are mostly subtle: a cleared area where people have camped, trails, blaze marks on trees, and occasional rustic dam raising a lake’s water level by a few feet. The experience is very different along Scotland’s Great Glen Way, the 80 mile trail between Fort William and Inverness. Here the marks of human prese ..read more
