Post-Corona Dreamin’

There’s no way to sugar-coat this.  Despite recent easing of restrictions in some States, the last seven months have been extremely difficult on all of us, clearly more on some than on others.    Since the Covid-19 shutdown we have all been doing our best to deal with businesses closing, depleted shelves and social isolation on an unprecedented scale.  My greatest fear is that this prolonged isolation has forever altered the DNA of the American spirit.  At the very least, that spirit has been battered and bruised beyond recognition.  And this is not just an idle ..read more

Miss Kiri Kat Comments on Coronavirus

No question about it.  We are living through difficult times on many levels; but our Miss Kiri Kat doesn’t quite see what all the fuss is about.  I’ll let her explain it to you in her own words.  “So what’s all this I keep hearing about a Coronavirus thingy?  Isn’t a virus like a “bug” that you catch?  I know how to deal with bugs when I catch them.  Been doing it for years.  I just pull off their legs (not tasty) and eat their bodies (quite tasty).  Result – one tasty treat and one dead bug.  Problem solved.  ..read more

This year the Gregorian Calendar Gods added an extra day to the month of February in honor of my birthday.  What a wonderful gift -- the gift of time -- the one thing we never have enough of, like shoes and perfume.  Of course, some people think it happens automatically every four years, but don’t you believe it.  In any case, I hope you made the most of that extra day.  Following a pre-Birthday dinner celebration featuring my favorite widow, La Veuve Clicquot, chez Anna and Novis we all went to Bistro La Minette in Philadelphia.  The fois gras was delicious and t ..read more

Holiday Cheer and a Big Merci Beaucoup!

This Blog post will be a bit chatty, but you can breathe a sigh of relief; it will NOT be “listy,” as in those dreaded New Year’s resolutions.  They are a waste of time to put together and an even bigger waste of time to read.   Spare me!!  Spare you!!  I would, however, like to start off the New Year with a big Merci Beaucoup to all of you who have faithfully followed my Blog over the years and taken time from your busy lives to leave so many delightful comments.   Believe me, they are the best reward a Blogger can get.  Now to the chatty part ..read more

Small Town; Big City

I grew up in a rough-and-tumble neighborhood on the outskirts of Philadelphia.  It wasn’t geographically part of the city, but it was so close that I could walk to the road that divided us and to the transit system that would have me in center city in ten minutes.  My first “official” summer job was in center city Philadelphia.  It was just a clerical job, mostly filing, but at 15 I felt very grown up taking the Market-Frankford El to 15th Street each morning with all the other ladies in their crisp, summer dresses and high heels.  They were the secretaries to middle ..read more

What I Do on a Rainy Day
The French Touch

Woke up this morning to a dreary, rainy Sunday -- perfect for puttering.  Since Dan couldn’t play golf, he went downstairs to watch others do so on TV.  And since this is Halloween week, Miss Kiri Kat decided to spend the morning putting together Trick or Treat bags for us, not to be opened until the day of.  We promised.   The less-industrious me decided to indulge in a typical, lazy Sunday morning ritual à la française.  We call it faire grasse matinée.  Nobody does nothing better than the French, and I love luxuriating in that particular Gallic tradit ..read more

My fall is starting off sooo well.  Lots of goodies on my harvest plate that I want to share with you!   Meant to get to this sooner, but I can’t tell you how many times I sat down, started typing away and something (or someone) interrupted me.  You know that old saying – “Man proposes and God disposes.”  Actually, I have my own take on it.  I think it should go more like this -- “Man makes plans and God says, ‘Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! ………. Nope.”  I’m convinced He has a sense of humor, and I often picture Him getting a big laugh at what we think we can do.  ..read more

I know, I know, it’s been a while between Part 2 and the promised Part 3.  Unfortunately, Part 3 had to wait until my back could handle sitting at my computer for longer than a few minutes at a stretch.  I have no idea what I did to annoy it, but my back and I have finally settled our differences – more or less.   So, without further ado, let’s dip into the last installment of My Summer Highlights.  Hope you’ll think the wait was worth it.  ..read more

Welcome to My Summer Highlights – Part 2 (See My Summer Highlights – Part 1).  The first week of September is almost behind us, and I’m really looking forward to fall.  I love the weather, the clothes, Mother Nature’s color palette, and the beginning of opera season in New York.  Photo by Louise Leblanc from Wide Open Country Not that I didn’t enjoy my summer, I did, well…..apart from the thunder storms and downpours which occurred at some point almost every day, and the hot, sticky temperatures that accompanied them, all of which kept me indoors most of the time ..read more

Figuring Out the Consumer

The inscrutability of the species Felis catushas been well known since the first ancient Egyptian brought home a tiny ball of fur (“Honey, look what I’ve got?”) and learned that he had to do a bit of work to create the perfect relationship with this tiny ball of fur that suddenly became a cat.   Those of us who own cats know that figuring out what they want is endlessly fascinating and rewarding and well worth the effort.  There's Nothing Better Than a Laundry Basket Full of Clothes Right Out of the Dryer Photo © Marie-Thérèse Norris Take my Miss Kiri Kat, for examp ..read more
