How Many Breweries in San Diego? Summer 2020 Edition
Craft Beer In SanDiego

So long, and thanks for all the beer I started this blog in 2016, when there were about 130 craft breweries and tasting rooms in San Diego. There are now, as you can see, many more. In that period, I wrote about 300 posts for this site, plus 50 or so articles for Coast News. But to everything there is a season, and I’m ready to move on to other projects. Fortunately, just as I was thinking about closing things down, someone offered to buy the site. I’m happy that the content will have a home. Further activity on this blog and/or using this content will be from the new owner. How many brewerie ..read more

How Many Breweries in San Diego? Spring 2020 Edition

In answer to the question in the headline: Who knows? In the COVID-19 era, many breweries are operating at reduced capacity, some seem to be thriving with pick-up and delivery options, some aren’t operating but plan to reopen, some new ones are in the process of opening up, and some have closed down permanently. In light of this nearly complete uncertainty, I won’t be publishing a number of breweries in San Diego this month. And this month’s entry will have to stand as the only entry in this series for awhile, probably until things open up again. Who knows when that will be. But there are a fe ..read more

Is it okay to enjoy beer in a tragedy?
Craft Beer In SanDiego

We are all aware of the COVID-19 pandemic and the emergency situation it is causing in the US and around the world. Every moment the news seems to get worse. People are suffering and dying, political leaders are failing us, the economy is in free fall, and so many people are out of work, including our friends in the brewing industry. One of the few bright spots has been Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau directly addressing kids. With so much bad happening, is it okay to take personal enjoyment in craft beer? Isn’t it a frivolous, selfish thing to do? I say no. I say, finding ways to conti ..read more

As of the end of February 2020, San Diego County is home to 157 craft & 2 non-craft breweries (net -2 over January 31, 2020), 57 craft & 1 non-craft tasting rooms (no change), for a grand total of 217 locations (net -2). There are 44 additional projects in planning (at various stages, with various levels of likelihood of completion), 14 of which seem likely to open before the end of 2020. Here is THE LIST of breweries and tasting rooms. (As always, it is an Excel spreadsheet that is kept up to date whenever changes are announced, and you can sort it on business type, food, neighborhoo ..read more

There are now 159 craft and 2 non-craft breweries in San Diego County ( net +1), 57 craft and 1 non-craft tasting rooms (net +2), for a grand total of 219 locations (net +3). Four new locations set to open later this year were announced in January 2020, bringing the total number of projects in planning to 44 (27 tasting rooms and 18 breweries, about 14 of which I judge to have a good chance of coming to fruition in 2020. Here is THE LIST of breweries and tasting rooms, in a conveniently sort-able spreadsheet. January did not quite manifested the flurry of openings I had been expecting. Those ..read more

Karl Strauss Brewing, Carlsbad--A return visit
Craft Beer In SanDiego

I first visited this location back in 2017. It has been awhile, so I stopped in for lunch recently. I wrote about my recent visit in my Coast News column, so I won’t repeat everything I said there. TL;DR: It is still a great location, I love the beer, and the food is good. Some additional photos below. I selected Karl Strauss Brewing as one of my “Underrated San Diego Breweries” last year. They are famous and well-respected, but not nearly as much as their greatness deserves. The Karl Strauss Carlsbad location also made my list of favorite patios ..read more

Hopnonymous Brewing, Kearny Mesa
Craft Beer In SanDiego

After a visit to the County offices, I needed a beer. Luckily for me, Hopnonymous was just a couple of miles away. Hopnonymous has an interesting business model. Their main business is to brew house beers for bars and restaurants. They do so anonymously, hence the name. They’ve doing this “under the radar” since 2018 and now have seventeen clients, according to Ian Anderson’s San Diego Reader piece that coincidentally was published the day I visited. (That’s the trouble with only having newer places left to visit, those are the ones that are newsworthy, so all the other San Diego beer writers ..read more

What Does SCOBY Do? JuneShine Hard Kombucha, Scripps Ranch
Craft Beer In SanDiego

At the end of November 2019, I had the opportunity to do a phone interview with Greg Peters, chief brewing officer at JuneShine. It took me until a few days ago to make it over to their Scripps Ranch tasting room to get some photos. But now that I have those, here’s a little write up. JuneShine isn’t craft beer, but it is definitely relevant to this blog: it is “craft beer adjacent” for sure, and they are doing some things that I hope more craft breweries will try to emulate. JuneShine Hard Kombucha originally launched in June 2018 in the North Park Brewery Igniter. They took off so quickly ..read more

San Diego Beer Tour: Downtown Vista
Craft Beer In SanDiego
by Bill Vanderburgh

Vista is a brewery heaven. That’s largely because of the foresight of the local economic development team and the city council, who realized early in the craft beer boom that making brewery-friendly policies would be good for their city. They credit the breweries and tasting rooms in the downtown are for sparking a significant revitalization there. The result is that Vista has 22 craft beer locations (as January 2020). That’s more than North Park (14), East Village (11) or even Miramar (16). Hot take: Vista is the real heart of craft beer in San Diego County. You can’t put 19 breweries and 3 ..read more

Craft Beer In SanDiego

It has been awhile and I was passing by so I stopped in to see the recently renovated space. It is gorgeous, and although there is more room and more seating (they’ve made the back area fully part of the tasting room now), it nevertheless feels kind of empty even with twenty-five-people in it. There were lots of friends meeting and greeting, the friendly vibe enhanced by the bartender’s low-key patter. The cool mural is gone, replaced with tapestries of the same characters. The reno reminds me how much Scandinavian interior design owes to Japanese interior design. The front room that had be ..read more
