You’ve probably noticed that your health care provider checks your heart rate during every visit. That’s because your heart is one of the most important organs in your body. Unlocking Heart Valve Health with Minimally Invasive Options

Imagine your heart is a house where the four chambers are four rooms, and your heart valves are the doors. Those doors, or valves, open and close to control blood flow in the heart. They make sure blood moves when it’s supposed to and goes where it’s needed. Healthy heart valves have door-like flaps that fully open and close to keep the blood moving.   But for people with valvular heart disease, those doors don’t work as well as they should. The flaps on the heart valves might not fully open or close. Most commonly, valves can get too narrow and limit blood flow. Heart valves can also lea ..read more

Emory Heart and Vascular Center Implants 500th Lifesaving Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD)

by Emory Heart & Vascular Center
1y ago
First used in the 1960s, the ventricular assist device supplies mechanical circulatory support by pumping blood from the ventricles, or lower chambers of the heart, to the rest of the body. Because the device is almost always placed on the left side of the heart, the device is frequently referred to as an LVAD, rather than VAD. When a patient’s heart has gone into end-stage failure, but they don’t qualify for a transplant – or if it will take too much time to get a transplant – an LVAD provides an alternative course of action that can often mean the difference between life and death. 500 LVAD ..read more

When Kaleb McGary heard his name announced as a first-round pick by the Atlanta Falcons in the 2019 National Football League draft, he had mixed feelings. “It was an incredible feeling of accomplishment to finally reach my dream of playing in the NFL. A real shock-and-awe experience after years of blood, sweat and tears,” says Kaleb. In many ways, he’d taken the same path most NFL draftees take: He first became a stand-out high school football star and then moved on to a stand-out career with an NCAA Division I football program. From the outside looking in, it may have looked like Kaleb was le ..read more
