Here’s a short recap of achievements in 2023: Iris kidded a doeling and a buckling in May, 2023. A prolific milker, she provided milk for the soap business and the family. With milk safety in mind, I recently purchased a home lab. An achievement of which I’m extremely proud. For my peace of mind, I wrote a detailed RAMP (Risk Assessment Management Plan), CCP (Critical Control Points), and SSOP (Standard Sanitary Operating Procedures), as well, I sent Iris’ milk to the lab for testing – three months in a row. The lab tests look for Coliforms, Fecal E. coli, E. coli 0157H7, TPC (Total Plate Cou ..read more

An odd little post about Betty, er, Elizabeth. I bought this lovely old cook-stove from an acquaintance who needed to downsize. I admit my heart fluttered and my brain, well, I vanished down the rabbit hole of childhood memories. Memories. I grew up in a small town in the interior of British Columbia, Canada. My parents owned a summer cabin and at the end of the school year would stay until the end of August. Joyous, wondrous, childhood memories. I imagine I learned to walk about the same time I learned to swim. I digress. The stove. Wood smoke. As a young child I remember the sound of my fa ..read more

Avian flu. It’s a thing and it’s scary. It can wipe out flocks of birds overnight. The last time the ducks and chickens at Point 6 Acre went into lock-down was June, 2022. At the moment, there are outbreaks of Avian flu on the Lower Mainland of British Columbia. This is some distance from our little farm, but close enough to be of concern. Enough the Government of BC issued the following: Avian Influenza in British Columbia Since October 21st, 2023, new cases of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) have been detected at poultry premises in British Columbia. Prior to this, there had been no ..read more

I find it incredible Hazel and Filbert are one month old. Where does the time go? Here is an adorable phone of them. It’s like a trick photo. Look at it, it seems to be one goat, look closer and you see they are nose to nose. Filbert on the left, Hazel on the right ..read more

Why ducks?

In May, 2019 I never thought I’d be a poultry person – specifically a duck person. One look however, and I was besotted. I can’t imagine my world without them. Take a look – Could you ignore such cuteness? Not me! I set up a four foot by two foot tote with shavings in the bottom, waterer raised up and surrounded by a moat of shavings. A piece of chicken wire folded over the top, and my ducklings were home. The cat followed their shadows on the outside whilst the dog took one look, sniffed, and with a disgusted huff, walked away. It was clear I was the one enamored with them. Within no time w ..read more

Choices. Our lives are filled with them. Those we make throughout the day, life-changing ones, and ones that relate to our health practitioners – I’d argue the latter is life-changing too!   Luckily, there is often an abundance of the same sort of practitioner available to us. When we have the opportunity to pick and choose, it doesn’t get much better than that.   As a foot and hand reflexologist on a small island, I am heartened and delighted to find including myself, there are three other RCRT’s (Registered Canadian Reflexology Therapists) to choose from!   You might as ..read more

Insurance Providers for reflexology

As a Registered Canadian Reflexology Therapist, I believe in the professional practice of reflexology and its place in the integrative healthcare system. I’ve had conversations with many clients over the years of whether or not they are covered by their Insurance Providers. While many insurance firms now cover reflexology performed by an RCRT, Pacific Blue Cross still does not. RAC (Reflexology Association of Canada) and the BC Chapter are actively trying to bring much needed change to have reflexology covered. In order to facilitate this change, a critical mass of clients and other parties mu ..read more

Self-care.

A recurring theme I hear from clients is, “What a year”, followed by, “Where did it go?” And, “COVID has changed how we, as a species, interact with each other.” People are hesitant to hug, or offer a comforting hand on a shoulder. The merest pause to reflect, “should I?” and the moment of connection with another is gone. We’re being asked to socially distance from one another, which in turn, I believe, may cause us to emotionally distance ourselves from each other. I think this is where the importance of self-care comes in. We can all use less stress. Body workers of all kinds use their skill ..read more
