Film Shooters Collective members were challenged late in 2022 to complete a film swap project. Here we present the results of one collaboration. In this type of double exposure, one photographer shoots the roll of film, rewinds, and sends to the second photographer to shoot a second set of images. The results are always surprising, often beautiful and sometimes downright amazing.
For this swap, Katie Mollon and I swapped two rolls of film. Each of us shot one roll in areas around their home towns, then swapped by mail. That gave two sets of fun results. Since Katie lives in Detroit and I live ..read more

This month marks the start of a new feature from Film Shooters Collective. Approximately once a month we will be featuring a film photographer on both the blog and our Instagram feed. The IG feature will be a one day feature exclusively highlighting the photographer’s work and the web post will tell you a bit more about the person behind the photos.
This month’s featured photographer is Steve Selvidge from Memphis, TN. You can see a lot more of his work at his Instagram https://www.instagram.com/SSS_Film_Pix/ . This photo of Steve is courtesy of his wife, Joann Self Selvidge.

Pocket cameras, or spy cameras as they were often marketed, had their heyday in the 1970s and 1980s. The pocket camera is built like a slender gold bar, and it’s very rectangular. My mother had the Kodak Instamatic that was packaged in a golden, heavy-cardboard case and took flashbulbs that looked like glitzy ice-cubes that I was transfixed by as a kid. The pocket camera was my first glimpse into the magic of photography, so no wonder they still hold wonder for me.
During high-school in the 1990s, my parents got me my first camera for Christmas—also a Kodak pocket camera, in a bright teal s ..read more

In celebration of Holga Week 2022 – we asked you to send in a favorite Holga image. The Holga is a simple toy camera. It's usually associated with square images on 120 film - but is also available in a variety of formats – including 35mm. Because its lens is plastic, the edges of the frame are quite soft, and often vignetted. I encourage everyone to embrace the quirkiness of this camera. Its lack of mechanics make it very easy to experiment with. Simply click the shutter as many times as desired to create multiple exposure effects.
This set of images shows off the wide range of photographic st ..read more

It was 3:24 pm on a Friday, 8th of July 2022. As every worker in a white collar begins to appreciate the ever-lingering movement of the minute hand, most of them realise their weekend daydreams might just come to fruition, given it’s the 28th weekend of the year.
A commonly accepted truth is this - the wall clock moves slower if you stare at it.
A sudden teams inbox message requesting an audio call came slightly too late for my comfort; perhaps it’s the loose ends that need tying again.
Two things resulted from that audio call:
My plan for the foreseeable week is cancelled

World Cyanotype Day is approaching: to paraphrase Tennyson “ah, late summer, when a woman’s fancy turns to cyanotypes!” Around August each year, I feel the lure of blue calling to me, and I brave the ridiculous Texas heat and humidity to make yet another crop of prints.
I first learned about making cyanotypes in 2015, although even before that they had snuck into my life via my (then) young daughter’s birthday in the form of a “sun print” kit. While I thought they were interesting, I wasn’t instantly hooked; it took my playing around with the process a little bit. Once I realize what I could d ..read more

Dear FSC friends, this is Urizen Freaza.
Polaroid Week and this roundup always make me think about what's so special about instant photography. The first time someone asked me why I shot polaroid, I didn't know what to reply. At the time analogue was supposed to be dead and all this stuff was hipster nonsense that people did to make themselves feel special. And this is what my friend thought I was doing. And I hated that. As one of those 'wit of the staircase' moments, I believe this is why I keep obsessively asking myself this question: 'why polaroid?' Even today. So next time I might have a ..read more

I was looking at the photos I had taken and this quote from Mexico’s acclaimed poet Octavio Paz came to mind:
“To live is to be separated from what we were in order to approach what we are going to be in the mysterious future. Solitude is the profoundest fact of the human condition. Man is the only being who knows he is alone, and the only one who seeks out another."
I freelance as a TV camera operator. I had worked on a number of food and travel shows, and in 2015 I joined the crew of the PBS “Pati’s Mexican Table.” Every year we would travel to a new region of Mexico and spend a few week ..read more
