How’d you spend your January and February? Going out exploring the city, living a healthy cultural life, seeing the sights, painting the town red? Or did you, like all sensible people, cloister yourself away, wrapped in a thousand blankets, to wait out the end of winter like an agoraphobic hermit? Well, if you did the latter you might have missed some amazing art exhibitions. Massive audiovisual installations, feminist ire, conceptual cleverness, classical painting and loads of adorableness, there’s something for everyone. But be quick, you’ve only got a few weeks left to catch these sho ..read more

One of London’s most famous pub theatres has gone on the market. The Old Red Lion in Islington has played host to various famous playwrights and theatrical creatives over the years – current West End smash ‘The Play that Goes Wrong’ began its journey there, way back in 2012. There’s been a pub on the site since 1415 – when Islington was a rural village – but the theatre bit dates back to 1979, and it’s been a quietly influential destination since. The Grade II-listed building has gone on sale due to owner Damian Devine wanting to move on after 25 years, rather than either  ..read more

The iconic gig venue Bush Hall could be forced to stop playing live music. The grassroots music venue is crowdfunding to raise £42,000 by April 12 or risk losing its music status.  Over the years Bush Hall has hosted gigs by Amy Winehouse, Adele, Florence & The Machine, Nick Cave, The Killers and many more stars. But the former Edwardian dance hall said it was struggling to keep up with rising costs and declining spending, leaving it ‘in the red month on month’. Bush Hall said its bank was ‘forcing a sale’ to repay the fixed-term mortgage, meaning&n ..read more

Nicholas Hytner and Katie Mitchell are the big names in David Byrne’s first season at the Royal Court
Time Out London

Would it be melodramatic to say this is the most important Royal Court season in decades? Possibly. But the Sloane Square new writing powerhouse has had a difficult few years since the pandemic, with reports of financial difficulties, a string of critical flops, and public criticism from playwrights over its lack of communication with writers.  Incoming artistic director David Byrne – no, not the Talking Heads guy – therefore needs to both turn in a season of exciting new writing that shows the Court is still relevant, while also programming plays that look like hits. If not West En ..read more

London’s biennial international theatrical blowout LIFT (that’s London International Festival of Theatre) is back with us for 2024, and has just announced an exciting new summer season that’ll take place across multiple London venues.  As ever, some of this stuff can be a little difficult to get your head around until you see it, but on the whole it’s high-concept global theatre with hefty international budgets, work that you’d never normally see in the UK brought handily to London for your perusal – each of these shows is something you’re unlikely to ever see the like of again. ‘The Lan ..read more

Us Londoners know all too well that this city is crammed full of fab stuff to see, do, eat and drink. It’s the biggest night of the year for British music. And where else (apart from maybe Chiltern Firehouse) are you going to see Dua Lipa, Kylie and Roman Kemp all dressed up to the nines in one place? Like the Grammy’s earlier in February, women are the champions of this year’s Brits; former Time Out cover star and famous Londoner Raye was named songwriter of the year earlier this week, and broke records as the musician to receive the most Brit nominations in a single year. We also got to see the UK’s unofficial royals Stormzy and Maya Jama on the red carpet ..read more

If you’ve got a free day in your calendar coming up, don’t squander it on something boring like batchcooking, cleaning or drafting vengeful messages to your foes. TfL has unveiled a new 15-mile walking route that crosses some of London’s most fascinating corners. Take on all the whole damn thing in a glorious (if exhausting) all-day hike, or pick and choose the stretches that catch your fancy.  The so-called Green Link Route is a direct response to London’s love affair with putting one foot in front of the other, with a 10 percent increase in walking since the pandemic, and 57 percent of ..read more
