I’ve gone & done it, I’ve opened an Etsy shop! Throughout quarantine, during these trying times, I’ve really been taking my embroidery skills to the next level. Lord knows I have the time. Enough people told me to open an Etsy shop, so I finally did it! A huge thank you to everyone who has already purchased a piece and been so supportive. It truly means so much. My style is eclectic and whimsical. I don’t like fitting myself into a box because there’s just too many great, fun things to create! I have a lot more ideas for the future of my shop & I hope you follow along. Maybe you’ll see ..read more

It is my belief that synchronicity (or perhaps you call it coincidence) means you’re on the right path. I believe that when we ask, the universe answers. And this is how I discovered who my deity is. I first learned about the concept of working with the energies of saints and deities from my friend who works with Joan of Arc. I was so fascinated by this idea and learned that they will make themselves known to you when, and if, the time is right, you can’t rush it. What does it mean to work with a god/goddess? I suppose it’s similar to how people of different religions work with Jesus, or Allah ..read more

Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, and Happy New Year! It has been a DIFFERENT holiday season this year, that’s for sure. The first Christmas of my life I didn’t spend Christmas morning with my mom in person. Thank God for Zoom so we could keep it as normal as possible. Perhaps it’s because of the worldwide pandemic and losing a job for the second time in 2020 , but I just haven’t been in the Christmas spirit this year. Nevertheless, it didn’t stop me from trying to conjure up some cheer. What always makes me feel cheerful is giving. I feel like I was put on this planet to help people (why bein ..read more

October Picks!

Well it’s just about over, my favourite month! The crispness of the autumn air! The thinning of the veil between our world and the spirit world! Scary movies! It’s all just so… ~atmospheric~ I’ve really been enjoying this month and I wanted to share the things that I’ve been doing as they relate to the time at hand. A little interesting Halloween history first. It started as Samhain (pronounced sow-win), a Celtic pagan festival occurring Oct. 31st and Nov. 1st. It marks the halfway point between the Fall Equinox and the Winter Solstice. It’s the final harvest, the start of winter. It’s the tim ..read more

If you’re new here, welcome to Silver Birth! If you’re returning then you probably know me already, hi mom! This is my 160th blog post in nearly 4 years on here (but I took about a year off so really it’s 3 years, but whatever). Wow. I’ve come a long way from my first post entitled “The Beginning or (When I Finally Decided To Start A Blog)”. Lots has happened, I’ve attended 9 births in my doula career, including the most special one which was one of my best friend’s births last year. I’ve had quite a few other jobs in addition to my doula-ing. My partner and I now have three amazing cats. And ..read more

*Disclaimer: As a doula I am a non-medical professional. The words written here are my own views, and based on research that I have done myself. This is not to be taken as medical advice. Please speak with your health care provider and do your own research.* It’s been a while since my last post, about a year I’d say! Truthfully I haven’t had much going on, and with the current state of the world due to the Covid-19 pandemic, not many doulas have even been able to work. Something new I’ve started since quarantine though has inspired me to write here again. Being able to research something, le ..read more

I had the chance to start my week off with a trip to the Life After Birth Project exhibit yesterday! Mondays are usually my day off, so after taking a class at Barreworks, I headed further into downtown to check out this gallery that I’ve seen popping up all over my social media. Created in partnership by Knix & Carriage House Birth, the Life After Birth Project showcases over 250 photographs of postpartum women, and all the variations that that time period has to offer. Displayed in chronological order, with one end o ..read more

Oooh have I got a treat for you all! For my birthday last week, my mother gifted me this amazing flea market find: Preparing for Motherhood by Bernarr Macfadden, published in 1928. I love a good, vintage treasure! It’s so interesting to see what life was like way before our time. Especially where obstetrics and motherhood are concerned. I thought this would make a great follow up post to my ‘Obstetrics 90 Years Ago (& how things have changed)’ blog from a couple years ago. Check that post out if you haven’t already, i ..read more

Kate's Birth Story

*Story & photos shared with permission* On July 28th 2019 I had the honour of doula-ing for one of my oldest friends, Kate. So you can imagine how emotional this birth was! I feel that this story is important to share because it’s a fantastic example of how well a medicated birth can go. There’s often a lot of fear around inductions and interventions. Unfortunately we live in a sort of black & white world in terms of birth and bias. I’ll even admit that I had it in my own head that interventions usually turn into a cascade of problems. However that is not always the case. Unmedicate ..read more

I recently completed a course for doulas through Bellies Inc. This course was recommended to me by my friend Rachel of ‘Discover You’, who is a wonderful fitness trainer. I’m so glad she shared this company with me! The course I did was all about the pelvic floor and diastasis recti, something that affects all women who experience pregnancy. Let me just tell you that they know their stuff! I highly recommend checking them out, as well as their products, for a truly methodical approach to pregnancy & birth, and how it changes your body. Like I do with a lot of the birth information I learn ..read more
