Bad host family boundaries

So, I’ve been an au pair for about three months now. And, to say the least, my host mom has terrible boundaries. For instance, I was texting my friend the other day and she straight up asked me who I was texting. Like wtf? And I called my brother today and was having a private conversation outside and when I came in she basically tried to get me to tell her what we were talking about. Completely inappropriate. I’m not sure if this is “normal” host family behavior, but whenever I go out on my own or do something with friends, she always wants to know literally everything. What did you do? Wher ..read more

Hi! I have been lurking in this sub for a while as we’ve been preparing to host our first au pair and it has been so helpful! I’m trying to be the best host mom I can be. We are hosting an au pair from Brazil in the suburbs of a city on the west coast of the US. Our au pair arrived last week from and for the most part all is good. She is sweet and great with the kids, cleans up after herself, and we all get along well. The issue is with her driving. We specifically looked for an au pair with experience driving because our area requires it. We purchased a car for our au pair and expect her to ..read more

I don't know what to do

Spanish Au Pair in Ireland. 2 kids - 2.5yrs and 1yr old. First time as au pair. (censored some stuff for privacy I guess?? idk man) I arrived about four days ago and I already want to leave. It's just been red flag after red flag and I don't know what to do anymore. When I was on my way to the house on Saturday the father told me, for the first time, that the older kid doesn't speak English, that she speaks [SOMETHING ELSE] instead since they're from another country and that's what they've taught her. I cannot communicate with her beyond basic words. The grandparents, who are staying over for ..read more

Hello, some context, I’m au American au pair in paris, I arrived September 23’ and my visa ends this august. I just got my appointment for my renewal july 25, and I am hearing conflicting things from friends about social security number and carte vitale. First of all how do I get my ss nunber, it seems I can’t apply for carte vitale without it and do I need it to renew? Some friends say yes some say no and that they got it renewed without the ss/vitale. I’m having a hard time seeing where to start this process. Thanks in advance? submitted by /u/No_Cat_9634 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Decision paralysis

Hi everyone! I am looking to au pair and feel like I don't have enough information to make a decision on which region to au pair. I have settled on Italy or Spain. I am hoping for a region where: 1) there is lots to explore during my free time and it is easy to do day trips or weekend trips; and 2) where there is a good community of friendly young people, internationals or other au pairs so that I don't feel incredibly isolated during my experience. Trying to understand which region can offer both of these things is difficult, so Im hoping for any and all insight that could help me make my de ..read more

Looking for different type of Au Pair

I'm a disabled female looking for an Au Pair that is happy to do more housekeeping and cooking things. I really struggle day to day and need help in the home. They would not need to do any personal care, just normal household chores, cooking, and maybe some grocery shopping. There are no children but we would absolutely still treat you like part of the family. We've had overseas exchanges before and I've always loved having them and they've loved being here. Is that a reasonable ask, or am I being unreasonable? Please bear in mind, I'm in Australia and while this isn't a normal thing, it is l ..read more

Should I be honest about my illness?

Hello everyone! I'm planning to participate AuPair in Germany. But I have a question, I am a young cancer survivor who has completed treatment and can now lead a normal life and work without any issues from my illness. My only concern is that I need to undergo regular check-ups and receive injections for treatment in Germany (every three months). Would this cause concern for the host family? If I successfully make it to Germany, will my insurance cover my illness? Otherwise, I fear I may not be able to afford the expensive medical expenses. submitted by /u/wenjie-ye [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

I’ve been au pair twice before through au pair world. Everytime, they ask me what I like to eat. I have an allergy so both bought me some deprecate safe foods like butter to avoid cross contamination. my now au pair family. They only buy organic, and often complain how expensive it is. I told them about my allergy before thinking it’s not that deep. When I arrived I ate all their foods and just asked for soy milk. I bought some of my own foods like protein powder etc. they’ve never asked me what I like to eat. So I asked if I could have a specific yoghurt. Because they eat only ‘clean’ and ‘o ..read more

How to narrow down search AuPairWorld

I just made an Aupair World profile as I’m interested in Aupairing in Europe as an American. I didn’t even finish my profile yet but in one night, I received 25 messages. All the families look so nice but it’s already a bit overwhelming. What’s a good process to narrow down the families, and how many families should I schedule interviews with? How long should I expect this process to take? I want to make sure I’m communicating clearly and politely with the families as well. submitted by /u/rjjk0901 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more
