And, drum roll please…Happy Groundhog Day (or Whistle Pig if you wish). Phil did not see his shadow so if he is at least a little more successful a weather prognosticator than the pros we are due for an early spring. Of course the weather has been warmer than we usually expect for winter so that probably will contribute as well. Somewhere around here we have our own Groundhog aka a woodchuck but haven’t seen him/her since last summer. I never did get a chance to shoot him/her, only saw the evidence of him/her, nesting below our decks.

A friend alerted me to this owl a while back and I was lucky enough, and patient too, to get it with open eyes. Often they keep their eyes closed during the day, saving their energy for the night hunt I guess. I was pretty happy to get this shot. I hear plenty of owls in our backyard where we are near a wildlife sanctuary but I seldom see them.

On a visit to Murphy Falls a few years ago I noticed this piece of branch sitting in the shallow water of the brook with a nice coating of ice. Despite the power of the flowing water it remained as you see it for several days.
