We ended our summer road trip of the southeastern U.S. with a whirlwind day in Washington, D.C. Thanks to the SpotHero app, we found a great place to park a few blocks from our first stop, the Smithsonian National Air & Space Museum. Before we headed inside, we hit up the food trucks lining the streets and had a quick picnic outside the building. (Pro-tip: What we should have done was kept the food wrapped up, headed inside, and eaten it in the cafeteria. The food inside left a lot to be desired, and was expensive.) When Kendra suggested we spend the entire day at the Tennessee Aquarium in Chattanooga, I was skeptical. I figured, at best, we’d spend the morning there and then find something else to do in Chattanooga. Eight hours later, I was proven wrong. Tennessee Aquarium in ChattanoogaThe Tennessee Aquarium has two buildings, one dedicated to freshwater creatures, the other to salt water. A third building houses an IMAX theatre. Your tickets allow you to come and go throughout the day, and included entry to both exhibit buildings. River Journey Building We started our visit in the River Journe ..read more

We are on a bit of a whirlwind tour of the south, primarily to visit relatives. Our latest stop was Atlanta, Georgia for a quick overnight with Kendra’s Aunt Linda and Uncle Doug, who are both super awesome. They treated us to Thai food for dinner, and then Aunt Linda sent us to the Fernbank Museum of Natural History the next day. We were lucky enough to meet up with old friends from Kendra’s City Year days, and their two lovely beans. They explored the museum with us, which gave us time to catch up on each others’ lives. Getting this many little kids to pose for a picture is a difficul ..read more

Whenever we visit Kendra’s family in the south, we try to find fun outdoor adventures to have with the kids. Just 30-minutes from the Georgia border, Riley Moore Falls in Westminster, South Carolina, is an easy hike that leads to a 100-foot wide waterfall with a sandy beach and incredible swimming hole. It was the perfect place for a fun afternoon with the family, including Kendra’s parents (Jane and Boris) and her brother’s family (Colin, Tonia, Jada, and Olivia). Another Hike Up Mt. Pisgah in North Carolina

I never climbed anything other than out of my crib or up swing set poles as a kid. Yet somehow, I married an outdoorsy girl and I was transformed into a hiking and camping fanatic. When I met Kendra’s parents, they took me on a hike up Mt. Pisgah in North Carolina. It was a bit of a rite of initiation for me and has since become one for our kids as well. Addie’s first summit on her own two legs was Mt. Pisgah when she had just turned four. The twins were there too, but they hitched rides in our kid carriers. Addie crossing a stream while hiking Mt. We’re Coming Out! Again… and Again… and Again…

I think most people outside of the LGBTQ+ community think of coming out as a one-time thing – one day we wake up and announce we are gay, or trans, or bi, and then we move on with our lives. The reality is, we never stop coming out because the default assumption in our society is predicated on heteronormativity and cisnormativity. Everyone assumes I am straight until I tell them otherwise. Most times, I am very open about being married to a woman. Yet sometimes, I hesitate and weigh the consequences of coming out in a particular situation. There are certainly times I feel safer letting pe ..read more
