Why I Make Films

In the last week I have seen two very different but equally thought-provoking and life-affirming films. They have reminded me why I want to make films, and why I want to be a better person. If that sounds dramatic (and like a misquoted Oscar-winning film) then so be it, but to me the feels are real. Today I got the results of my Masters in Screenwriting and I got a First Class Honours. I am a bit shocked by this, but also pretty proud because I slogged my arse off this year in film school while also working, running a business and being a single parent. I was also lucky enough to win a sc ..read more

I am a breastfeeding, formula-feeding, soother-using, non-soother-using, sling-wearing, buggy-pushing, spoon-feeding, baby-led weaning, television-babysitter-using, screen-time limiting, child-entertaining, independence-fostering, baby-juggling mum.   In fact, I would go so far as to say that being a twin mum is quite relaxing, not because you are not constantly doing things, but because it makes you realise in a big way the impossibility of living up to any ideal of motherhood you might have. You cannot be perfect, so your children will have to put up with whatever you can give at any g ..read more

Being a parent is hard    I mean, it's really hard. If you have a child - or two or three - you don't need me to tell you this. At the beginning it can feel so overwhelming you don't think you can do it. I distinctly remember when Little Bird was about 6 weeks old nearly having an anxiety attack as the realisation set in that I was responsible for this tiny creature's physical and mental well-being for the rest of my life. That's a big deal. HUGE. The first few years are undoubtedly pretty mental. Prolonged sleep deprivation is just about the hardest thing I've ever had to cope with ..read more

Ho ho ho!   It's that time of year – time to start filling Santa's sack with lots of goodies. If you have a small child in your life – a grandchild, a niece or nephew, a friend's baby, or you're simply helping your little one write their letter to Santa – you might need a little inspiration.   Walking into a giant toy store can be pretty daunting. Won't baby just prefer the packaging? (Yes). Will the house just become cluttered with noisy and unwanted toys that need batteries and add-ons and a small DIY army just to extract from their packaging? (Yes, yes, and yes).   Some thing ..read more

When I was 6 years old I performed a poem with my best friend Gemma Byrne in a community talent show. I was so nervous before I went on stage I thought I might pee my pants. And I was so buzzed up afterwards I thought I might pee my pants. When I finally got to the loo and relieved my bladder, I knew what I wanted to do when I grew up... I had to be on stage! I'm still waiting to grow up, but I have spent a lot of time on stage and I still feel like I might pee my pants every time. These days however, with a kid to rear and rent to pay, I spend less time on stage (it's fierce time-consuming an ..read more

10 Intimate Things Shared at Baby Groups

After I gave birth to Little Bird I became addicted to baby groups. It didnʼt matter if they were discussing breastfeeding or singing nursery rhythms, I was there. Two years before that, I had moved a couple of hundred miles from home and so had no close friends and knew no other new mums. Myself and my partner were knee deep in a game of No-Iʼm-More-Tired-Than-You so for the first year of her life I sought solace and companionship in the intimate circle of motherʼs groups. Iʼd like to be 21st century and say Parent Groups but the honest truth is those mid-week meet ups were almost excl ..read more

Baby-Led Weaning AKA Alternative Dog Feeding

I read about baby-led weaning when Little Bird was still on the mommy milk and it sounded a little weird and a lot messy. Naturally I was on board immediately. So when she was chubby little pudding of 6 months she had her first bit of solid food – some steamed sweet potato. She was delighted with herself, holding a finger sized piece of sweet potato and smushing it into her gummy mouth. Each day we introduced a new 'solid' and soon her repertoire was quite extensive.  “I read about baby-led weaning when Little Bird was still on the mommy milk and it sounded a little weird and a lot ..read more
