GCSE English Language AQA - Paper 2 Question 3, 4 and 5  "Dark tourism has been defined as tourism involving travel to places historically associated with death and tragedy". If you follow a thematic curriculum for the delivery of English in FE, then I really do recommend the theme of Dark Tourism. A colleague in our department came up with the idea, so this is an altered version to suit my own teaching style. The topic covers so many relevant issues regarding E & D, morals and ethics. It is a sensitive topic, depending on which areas of Dark Tourism you wish to cover with yo ..read more

GCSE English Language - Pig Iron by Benjamin Myers

GCSE English Language AQA - Paper 1 Question 2 and 4 I read the novel Pig Iron during the first lockdown and I was astounded by the use of description and how it brutally and indeed beautifully reflected the events described through the book. One part that struck with me was a fight between Cliff Pike and Mac Wisdom - an extract worthy of language analysis and evaluation. Please note that there is a strong swearword in this extract but I feel the writer's choice of language is worthy of discussion for this age group (FE). Connect For the connect part of the session, I revisited lan ..read more

GCSE English Language AQA - Paper 2 Question 3 This was one of the first lessons that I taught once we started to teach from home at the beginning of 2021. The topic of food poverty was everywhere and as we started to cover our theme of 'Be Kind' across FS, it seems liked the perfect opportunity to cover this in GCSE. Connect As a connect activity, I showed the class a tweet from Marcus Rashford's twitter account. The tweet was 'I don't even know what to say. Just look at what we can do when we come together. THIS is England in 2020'. I asked the group 2 questions - why is this tweet e ..read more

An Introduction to Writing Skills This was an introduction session based on writing skills for the new term. Our new theme was 'Be Kind' which seemed relevant, what with everything that was going on in the world at the time. I really wanted the students to discuss and explore good stories of kindness out there amongst the doom and gloom! Before going through the PP, I showed them this YouTube clip of Kindness in Lockdown (which I admit made me quite teary).  Kindness in Lockdown The PowerPoint explains what they will be working on for writing in Functional Skills - providing l ..read more

Level 1 and 2 - Forum Writing Carrying on with our theme of kindness, I taught a session based on self care and actually being kind to ourselves. This was such an interesting topic to cover as some of the learners understood how we can be kind to others but they didn't really understand the importance of actually being kind to ourselves, too. This session is great if you wish to encourage well-being alongside the delivery of writing skills within FS English. Connect Our connect for this session was actually linking back to last week's letter writing task (this can of course be changed to suit ..read more

GCSE English Language - Paper 1 Question 2 As part of our first theme through until half-term, I have planned a lesson around the song 'Sober' by Tool. The intention is to get students thinking about noting down ideas at connotation level, while slowly unravelling the song and its message. Share - the objectives of the session are: 1.To explore interpretation and meaning through lyrics. 2.To analyse lyrics focusing on implied meanings, connotations and effects. 3.To find evidence to support different interpretations Present For each slide, I am asking my students to contribute towards ..read more

GCSE English Language - Paper 1 Question 2 and 3 All these Beautiful Strangers - Elizabeth Klehfoth Lesson 1 - Structure For this session, I used an extract from the novel All these Beautiful Strangers as a focus point for both structure and language. This covered two sessions - one focusing on structure and the other on language. Connect The connect for this session included various images linked to a structural technique. Students, in teams, were challenged to name as many as they could, scoring 1 point for each correct answer. Extra points were awarded for additional techniques as l ..read more

GCSE English Language - Language Analysis and Evaluation Peter Gabriel - My Body is a Cage You all know by now that I love using songs and lyrics as part of my GCSE English delivery as I notice an increase in student engagement. This song's inspiration came from the Netflix series 'Dark' which I haven't used in a lesson yet but I think it's definitely something to explore with our GCSE students. Connect For the first part of the session, we included a link related to individual quote analysis based on last week's session. For this, I asked the class to think about: What the title o ..read more

Level 1 and 2 - Paragraphs & Diary Entries It's the beginning of a brand new decade with many events and trends that emerged during the 2010's. But is it even possible to define the last 10 years? A great lesson with opportunities for discussion, reflection and developing writing skills. For the start of the session, I gave out a punctuation proof-reading task based on two trends of the decade - veganism and the plastic backlash. This was then followed by a group discussion and a note-taking task based on what the learners remembered from the last decade. T ..read more

Level 1 and Level 2 - Comparing Ideas 2019 has been the year of activism and protest. From climate change to veganism and animal rights, people have been using their voices to get their messages across to society. It is important that we let our students know that they have a right to peacefully protest, so we decided to teach a Functional English skill through this topic. For the start of the session, I placed random debate topics for each student group. The topics included the following: climate change doesn't matter; women can't be mechanics; everyone should be vegan; footballers are ov ..read more
