Why should I stick with teaching ESL/EFL??

I really love teaching English. It just makes sense as an applicable tool that learners can use that has direct implications for them in a way that is, for want of a better word, obvious. It’s a lingua Franca and I’d love to dedicate my career to mastering the subject so I can teach it. But the market pays so little. I accepted a job in London at a language school for £22 an hour x 20 hours. That’s around £22k a year. Meanwhile, there are international schools happy to throw money at teachers qualified to teach GCSE and A level English. I have those qualifications myself at A* level in GCSE a ..read more

Chinese agency somehow offering ultra-fast apostille service for Canada? Opinions please.

Hi there, I'm a Canadian trying to get documents apostilled in Canada so I can teach English in China. Honestly it's a ridiculously slow process in Canada that takes (it seems) at least 4 months to complete. There's one recruitment agency in China that found me a job at a University that starts in September. They actually found me a job for March but the school was unable to wait for me due to the long processing time. And now the problem associated with the new job is that work permits in China require a criminal record check that is no older than six months old. Well the process here in Can ..read more

Confused about TEFL providers and the degree requirement

Hi, I wanted to take the TEFL online courses as I'm thinking on perhaps teaching in the future as I'm abroad. However, on the MOOC website I found the 120h TEFL provided by tefl.org prices at 700$+ but on the TEFL.org website it's like 200$+ so I'm worried about it perhaps being a scam since it isn't listed in the subreddit saved posts. The other question is about the mention of jobs that don't need a degree even with TEFL are decreasing, but I was wondering when they say this, can it be ant degree or does it have to be specifically language/teaching related. Third question I did read somethi ..read more

I come from Eastern Europe and my English is on a C2 level. Is there a way to teach English in China even if I'm not a native English speaker (I have a bachelor's degree and hopefully a TEFL certificate soon)? Thank you in advance :) submitted by /u/LogikalResolution [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Anyone have experience working for CareerAsia in China?

It seems that they're a consulting/recruitment agency for several schools in Chengdu, where I'd like to teach. They're affiliated with something called Hua Fu Education Group. People say not to sign with an agency, just a school, but as someone with no teaching experience, basically the only people I've interviewed with have been agencies. I apply to a job, but the person on the other side is not the school, but an agent. Anyway they say they can 100% place me in Chengdu after onboarding, just wondering if anyone has any horror stories about this place because I can't find much on them online ..read more

Should I go through TEFL, or take my chances with JET?

I’m planning on teaching ESL abroad, and haven’t taken any steps forward yet. I’m currently a month away from getting a bachelors and have no idea on what to do after. I’m stuck between differing opinions on whether a TEFL certification is worth it compared to the lottery that JET is. I want to teach English overseas, preferably Japan which is JETs speciality but with only a thousand people a year getting selected it’s a job lottery. Do I have better chances just getting a certification and going through TEFLs job placement program or should I take the crap shot and apply for JET? I really li ..read more

Saving money in Taiwan/Hangzhou with this salary. Is it possible?

So, I'm a first-timer with no teaching experience. I've got a degree, I'm from the UK and completed a TEFL course (120 hours). I should also mention that I'm black. So I applied for a job in China and the recruiter got back to me telling me their "best options" are in Taiwan. The salary for that is "starting pay up to NT $650 - $700/hour". Another job I applied for in Hangzhou, China offered me a salary of 10,000-16,000 RMB before tax with 2500 housing allowance or free accommodation. Is saving up even possible if I were to accept any of these offers? submitted by /u/astralfatality [visit re ..read more

Which country would I most likely get hired to teach English in Europe?

Which country would I most likely get hired to teach English in Europe? I am American, 42 years old and non-EU citizen so from what I've read, it may be limited to non-EU or Eastern Europe countries. Any ideas on which countries have the highest demand for English teachers? I have a TEFL cert and two years of teaching, but that's from 10 years ago. I would do a CELTA and at least a few months to a year of volunteer teaching classes to immigrants here before I go anywhere. submitted by /u/Lepros311 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Question About Hiring

Hello! I’m about to graduate from my Master’s program and plan to do my CELTA starting on June 17th. Will I still be able to find a job once I finish in early July? I’m pretty open to wherever, so the location itself I’m not too worried about. I’m in this so I can have the opportunity to teach and learn new skills. Though if I had any preference, I speak some Spanish so maybe a country that speaks Spanish. Any suggestions? submitted by /u/tolovelikeyou [visit reddit] [comments ..read more
