Stay Home Dad and Son - Our Lives

In January 2022, a father was arrested for killing his 11 year-old twin boys who both have Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). This case was trialed recently in August 2023, and the 49 year-old father was sentenced to 14 years imprisonment. This unfortunate case sent shock waves in the entire somewhat calm and peaceful Singapore, where such atrocities were few and far between. I am here, not to sprinkle more salt and pepper into the controversy surrounding the case. I simply wish to share my own experience. See, I have a son who was diagnosed with ASD. As the name of the diagnosis literally wri ..read more

My World of Science - Light and Dark
Stay Home Dad and Son - Our Lives

Guess what we learned today? Something very simple that exists in our everyday living – light and dark. Kai and I read the book ‘My World of Science – Light and Dark’ together. (Book cover shown in this picture.) Why read together? When I borrow books from the library, I would choose books that Kai could complete reading them independently. Also, I would select books that I think could challenge him. These books would be slightly more text intensive, i.e. more words or pages, or would contain bigger and challenging words to enunciate, or both. This ‘Light and Dark’ has a bit more text ..read more

Just today on 15 December 2013, I supported Kai in reading the book, ‘Around the World – Bicycles’ authored by Kate Petty (above picture). In this book, there are fantastic pictures of people using bicycles in many different countries – Vietnam, Thailand, Australia, UK, Cambodia, Malawi, Kenya, etc. It’s a great book that helps us to learn about bicycles, world geography, people and cultures. Love it! I am so proud that Kai could read almost every word accurately, except the names of people and their countries. It is not a difficult book anyway. As he read, we took the opportunity to obs ..read more

In August 2019, our family moved from Singapore to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia! My wife has been hired to teach in The KAUST School and my son attends Grade 8 at the same school for the full day. This allows me to go back to work full-time. Within a short one month of landing in Jeddah, I was hired and started working in the HR frontdesk in King Abdullah University of Science and Technology.  There is so much to learn and my colleagues are so nice, I just enjoyed going to work everyday after 10 years of hibernation during which all thoughts of returning to work, especially in HR, were all snuffed ..read more

I am an ordinary Singaporean born in the 70s.  Unlike our nation’s proud rise from dust to glory in 5 decades of nation building, I have always felt insignificant for having come from a poor and dysfunctional family.  Our stall looked like this pushcart selling drinksMy parents slogged in old Chinatown, peddling sugar cane juice from a pushcart. A middle child, at the age of nine or ten, I had to do all the hard labour my tyrant dad demanded of me, or else suffer his wrath. Believe me, you won’t like him when he is angry.  For instance, I had to collect huge buckets of water for our litt ..read more

Facade of Chinatown ComplexI was a weak skinny wimpy little boy. At about the time when I was in secondary school, Singapore was fiercely sweeping the streets of Chinatown.  The Urban Redevelopment Authority was shoving makeshift stalls and pushcarts from the streets into organized markets and food courts, with appropriately sized stalls, tables, seats, toilets, disposal areas and all.  These are places constructed for the purpose of buying, selling and eating food, and allegedly cleaner and more hygienic than the streets, yet with untainted flavor and preserved local authenticity. This ..read more
