A Win for Dad (and Dads Everywhere)
The Good-Bad Dad

When Peter Malnati won the 2024 Valspar Championship his golf life changed. From my point of view behind the ropes, I hope his dad life won’t. You see, after watching Thursday’s First Round, I waited behind the tournament’s “Autograph Alley” as each golfer with an afternoon tee time wrapped up their day and waited for their golf cart shuttles back to the locker rooms. My son and a friend had tagged along with me after leaving school and seemed determined to wait as long as was required to get a signature from the PGA Tour’s top stars in attendance. At Valspar, there is a mix of famous to not-s ..read more

How Teens Evade Life 360 – A Step-by-Step Guide for Parents
The Good-Bad Dad

Technology is the best for parents. When I was a teenager, my parents only knew roughly where I was, or where I was headed. I never really abused that trust, but I did stretch it – by staying out later than curfew or staying at Ryan’s, not Ben’s, etc. Nothing totally abnormal for a teen and nothing would lead to significant trouble. Today’s technology has, alas, revolutionized parenting. Now, we can track our teen’s every move like how fast they are driving, if they used the phone while on the road. We can send annoying sounds to their phone until they return our check-in calls. Parents have t ..read more

***Opinions and content are my own and in no way affiliated with Bobby Bones, The Bobby Bones Show, or iHeart Media*** On April 3rd, Bobby Bones’ and The Raging Idiots will take the Ryman’s stage with a star-studded lineup of Country Music stars to raise money for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. With so many big names performing (like Sam Hunt, Nate Smith, Ben Rector, and Edwin McCain), it would be easy to overlook the Ryman Auditorium in the lineup. But, you should fight the urge. The Ryman’s place in music history is as rich as the stars that have graced it’s stage during Bones’ Milli ..read more

NIL and Youth Sports for “Good” Players: What’s a Parent to Watch for?
The Good-Bad Dad

Most of us are not raising top-level athletes. The numbers tell us parents that only 1% of participating athletes play after high school. Our kids might be damn good, even have, in our assessment, the ability to play their sport of choice at a collegiate level – mostly lower levels like DII, DIII, NAIA, or at a Junior College – but not the tippy-top that play on Saturdays in Tuscaloosa or Gainesville. DI programs in all sports are reserved for elite level athletes only. Good players need not apply. This also means that, in the “new world” of big money NIL (Name, Image, and Likeness) deals for ..read more

I Hate Wrestling, I Love Wrestling: A Dad’s Perspective
The Good-Bad Dad

It’s 9 am in a stinky high school gym in the middle of nowhere near Orlando, Florida. The competition is starting late, I’m tired and nervous for my son’s upcoming semi-final match. I hate wrestling. My son, needing one more win to qualify for the state tournament, loses a hard fought match 2-1. Dejected and cowering in a corner of the gym by himself, my son was on the verge of elimination and one defeat from the end of his wrestling career. Just a few feet away, the dad embraced his victorious son triumphantly – the kid who’d beaten my son (and qualified). Yeah, I HATE wrestling. At 11 am, th ..read more

***Opinions and content are my own and in no way affiliated with Bobby Bones, The Bobby Bones Show, or iHeart Media*** When syndicated country radio star Bobby Bones takes the stage with his sidekick “Producer” Eddie Garcia, and his band “The Raging Idiots” for their 7th Million Dollar Show at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, he will have inched a step closer to raising $25 million for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital to date. Assuming a normal charitable ratio of dollars to project good done with them, that would be over $100 million of societal benefit – no small feat for, as Bones of ..read more

WTR: Recent Autobiographies by Kenan Thompson and Arnold Schwarzenegger
The Good-Bad Dad

It’s been a minute since I’ve talked about the books I’ve recently opened and shut. As many of you have come to know, I’m a sucker for an autography by someone famous. For me, it’s not about the cool things they’ve done post stardom, it’s about their climb and the lessons I can learn by having studied them. First up, Former California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger’s newest title, “Be Useful: Seven Tools for Life”. I mean, how could Arnold’s life NOT be interesting? An immigrant and bodybuilder who becomes the highest paid actor in action, THEN in comedic roles, and THEN Governor of the most p ..read more
