{On a plaque at the base of the sculpture:} This is a memorial to all those now deceased who have worked on behalf of the Thames Tidal Defences. This includes former employees, colleagues and suppliers who contributed to our work over many years. We also remember those who lost their lives during the construction of the Thames Barrier and associated defences. We hope that this will provide a place for the family and friends of all those recognised here to reflect and remember, with affection, their loved ones. Walpole Park Opened for the use of the public, 1st May 1901 by the Rt. Hon. Lord George Hamilton, MP for the Ealing Division of Middlesex, Secretary of State for India. Purchased by the Ealing District Council in the year 1899 from Sir Spencer Walpole KCB, for the sum of £40,000, one fourth of which was contributed by the Middlesex County Council. London Stone This is a fragment of the original piece of limestone once securely fixed in the ground now fronting Cannon Street Station.  Removed in 1742 to the north side of the street, in 1798 it was built into the south wall of the Church of St Swithun London Stone which stood here until demolished in 1962.  Its origin and purpose are unknown but in 1188 there was a reference to Henry, son of Eylwin de Londenstane, subsequently Lord Mayor of London ..read more
