On New Year’s Day, I woke up wondering how to bring in an auspicious year. Browsing the Washington Post online, there was a photo of Great Falls National Park illustrating a weather forecast. Since I’d never been to the falls and have lived in DC for almost five years, I thought it would be a great start to the year to go visit. I’ve been playing with my Graflex Crown Graphic 4x5 camera lately, a field view camera manufactured in the 1960’s, so I brought that along as I headed out to Virginia. I haven’t used it very much and practice makes perfect. The first thing I’d thought I’d try is a basi ..read more

Attendants participate at the Rage Against the War Machine event, organized by the Libertarian movement, Feb. 19, 2023 in Washington at the Lincoln Memorial. I give this guy a lot of props for his impressive outfit. It makes communism seem so appealing and not totalitarian at all! What is more fun than a gathering of folks who want an open and free market but don’t want to pay for any of the services that make up civil society? Making double-exposures of the attendees! A couple of weekends ago, I went to the Rage Against The War Machine rally held at the Lincoln Memorial. The title, a ripoff ..read more

I have been feeling a little bored with photography, to the point where I feel it has become predictable. In most cases, I pretty much know how something is going to look even before I make a photo of it. Also needing something new to sink my teeth into, I decided to start making more unpredictable photos by focusing on double-exposures in my personal work for the foreseeable future. Within that technique, I thought using the potential chaos of a double-exposed frame would be useful in communicating how it feels to be at some of the many protests Washington, DC has to offer throughout the year ..read more

Cover and feature photography for Maryland Leaf magazine's September 2020 "Tannins and Terpenes" issue

Tannins and terpenes, compounds that exist in wine and cannabis respectively, have been known to complement each other’s flavor profiles. For the September 2020 issue of Maryland Leaf, creative director Daniel Berman and editor Wyatt Early and myself got together to illustrate the issue. The only caveat is that Daniel lives in Seattle while Wyatt and myself call Maryland home. We needed to figure out an effective way for Daniel to be present to help direct the shoot. We decided to set up my iPhone on a tripod and create a Zoom link for him to view the set. We also tethered my camera to my lap ..read more
