US President Joe Biden called Wednesday for a hike in steel tariffs on China, accusing it of cheating as he courted blue-collar voters on an election campaign trip to the battleground state of Pennsylvania.
Biden accused Beijing of xenophobia too in a speech to union members in Pittsburgh that also sought to contrast his defense of workers' rights with the record of his rival Donald Trump.

Alphabet-owned Google is laying off an unspecified number of employees, a company spokesperson said on Wednesday, marking the latest cuts at the technology giant as it cracks down on costs.
The Google spokesperson said the layoffs are not company-wide and that affected employees will be able to apply for internal roles, but did not specify the number of employees impacted nor the teams involved.
A small percentage of the impacted roles will move to hubs the company is investing in, including India, Chicago, Atlanta and Dublin.

Ahead of the parliamentary polls in the Maldives, the opposition parties have demanded a probe and impeachment of President Mohamed Muizzu following the leaked report of his alleged corruption from 2018, a charge dismissed by him.

The Netherlands' Amsterdam will no longer allow new hotel buildings to be built as part of its fight against mass tourism, the local government said on Wednesday.
"We want to make and keep the city liveable for residents and visitors. This means: no over-tourism, no new hotels, and no more than 20 million hotel overnight stays by tourists per year", it said in a statement.
A new hotel in Amsterdam can only be built if another hotel closes. If the number of sleeping places doesn't increase, and if the new hotel will be better, for example, more sustainable.

NASA's Ingenuity Mars helicopter has transmitted its final message to Earth and will now serve as an immobile data-gathering unit on the red planet's surface, the space agency said on Tuesday.
The tissue box-sized aircraft made history by achieving the first powered flight on another planet after hitching a ride under the belly of the Perseverance rover, which first lifted off the surface on April 19, 2021.

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf founder and jailed former prime minister Imran Khan on Wednesday alleged that Army chief General Asim Munir was directly responsible for the imprisonment of his wife Bushra Bibi.

Palestinian group Hamas said Wednesday that Iran's weekend attack on Israel was a "legitimate and deserved" response to a strike on the Islamic Republic's consulate in Syria.

With Dubai's highways flooded after record rain, a cat was found clinging to a submerged car's door. In a video posted by the Government of Dubai Media Office on X on Wednesday, the cat was seen clinging to a car's door handle while submerged in floodwaters.
The feline was rescued by the Dubai Police personnel who were on a boat.

A man who set fire to two men as they left mosques in Britain last year was sentenced to indefinite detention in hospital, Britain's Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) said on Wednesday.
Mohammed Abbkr was found guilty of attempting to murder two elderly men in separate incidents as they walked home, one from a mosque in London in February and another in Birmingham, central England, in March.
The CPS said there was no evidence Abbkr, 29, was motivated by a particular ideology, so the incidents were not treated as a terrorist attack.

Sweden's parliament on Wednesday passed a law that will make it easier for people to change their legal gender and lower the age at which it is allowed to 16 years from 18 years, despite heavy criticism from within the government coalition.
