What was the last military spouse event you attended? There are so many military spouse-centered events each year, and it’s tough to decide which ones to attend. And some months, traveling away from family, home, and your spouse is easier. Others (like when your spouse is deployed or unable to take leave) are nearly impossible. Last year, I had a list of events I wanted to attend. But my spouse was unable to take leave, his day started with PT at 0400, and I have kids. We had just moved, and my support system was nonexistent. As I slowly resigned myself to only one trip, that my dad was flying ..read more

You’ve probably heard the term “networking.” The definition is simple, “to connect or operate with a network.” But what is this “network” and where can I find it? When I find it what do I do? Most importantly, why do I even need it? Truthfully, I never really truly understood the value of a network until I moved to DC and started becoming more involved with a professional community; but regardless of where you are living or what career you are in, networking can be your lifeblood. Networking is a way to build your community, not only of professional colleagues, but people who are in the same s ..read more

We walked away from our discussions with a whole new appreciation of why Colorado Springs is such a great location for mi ..read more

What is YOUR Big Hairy Audacious Goal?

A Big Hairy Audacious Goal (BHAG) is a strategic business statement similar to a vision statement which is created to focus an organization on a single medium-long term organization-wide goal which is audacious, likely to be externally questionable, but not internally regarded as impossible. – Wikipedia Though it is traditionally a business concept, I have always loved the notion of a personal “big, hairy, audacious goal” for military spouses. We talk about SMART goals (specific, measurable, achievable, results-focused, and time-bound) all the time, but spend less time talking about the reach ..read more

Service members, retirees, veterans and military families living in Virginia now have a new resource thanks to Attorney General Mark Herring and his team. Our founder and president, Sue Hoppin was on hand to help launch the new guide and likened it to the PCS binders we compile ahead of each move. “We would compile all the information we’d need for the next duty station to include checklists and resources for each member of the family. But by the time we’d figure out all the service and installation specific resources, we’d run out of steam, figuring we’d get to the state and local information ..read more
