The Abacus Club was established in May 2011 by Dr. Nisih Freeman. It started following a visit to Indonesia where she saw primary school children computing sums mentally at great speed. She is currently looking at how the abacus might help children learn place value differently and how this might impact on their numerical abilities.

We currently have 3 sessions running at Belgrave Neighbourhood Centre in Leicester on Fridays from 4 to 7pm. Each session lasts for an hour.There is also online sessions you can attend if you don’t live nearby. There are now two one-hour sessions running at St. Leonard’s Community Centre which is located on 4 Bramcote Ln, Nottingham NG8 2ND. Here is the summary of 2019 KS1 SATS scaled scores achieved by children who have been studying with The Abacus Club. The passing score is 100 and the top score is 115. 61% of our 23 children who sat for 2019 KS1 Maths SATS achieved scaled scores of 110 and above. 100% of children achieved at least 100 ..read more

Completed another round of abacus sessions for elderly as part of Dementia Prevention Project sponsored by Nottinghamshire County Council. We are looking for teaching assistants to help with the running of after school maths clubs using the Japanese abacus in Leicester. Knowledge of how to use the abacus is not necessary as training will be provided.Qualification requirement:NVQ level 3 or aboveHours: After school hours from 3 to 6 pm depending on days of the week.
