The Lack of Agency was Brutal
Body Intelligence – Alexander Technique

Some years ago, I was doing some contractual work for a small company and found myself in an extremely stressful situation that went on for several months. I experienced weekly excruciatingly harsh feedback sessions from my employer. There’d be a nod to something I was doing well for a minute at the beginning, followed by an hour or more of exhaustive feedback on anything and everything I was doing “wrong” along with detailed instructions on what I should do differently. None of it was in and of itself untrue or unhelpful. However, the way in which the feedback was delivered, as well as the s ..read more

Use Your Triggers to Do Something Beneficial for You AND Your Nervous System I am excited to resume my conversations with Trauma Awareness activist, Shay Seaborne in which we talk about many and varied aspects of stress, trauma and neuroscience, and how the Alexander Technique has enabled her to put key concepts into practice in her own ongoing healing from severe complex post-traumatic stress disorder (CPTSD). In this video we talk about how an idea from my BodyIntelligence work and the Alexander Technique has helped her “turn around” one of her most stressful triggers – hyperacusis and ..read more

Body Intelligence – Alexander Technique
by Imogen Ragone
3y ago
A few weeks ago I conducted a series of public conversations on trauma, stress and the Alexander Technique with my friend, client, trauma survivor, and trauma awareness activist, Shay Seaborne. These are now also being released as podcasts on Body Learning (the Alexander Technique Podcast). In our first conversation Shay tells us a bit about her own story and experience, how she ended up at my door looking into the Alexander Technique, and some of the specific ways in which it has helped her manage stress and PTSD, and build resilience. We also share a simple idea you can use right away to hel ..read more

From Breath to Ease
Body Intelligence – Alexander Technique
by Imogen Ragone

I focus on my breath. I sense my ribs moving. I hear the sound of my breath going in and out of my nose. I have a sense of my breath filling my whole body – expanding gently into it – from the crown of my head to the tips of my fingers to the soles of my feet. I do a quick scan of my body. I notice a little tightness in the right side of my neck. It’s a habitual, familiar place. I also notice a slight restriction I was not aware of before in my left shoulder blade and the top of my shoulder. I decide to scan again. This time, as I do so, I ask myself, “Where do I notice a little ease right no ..read more

3 Keys to Coping with the Stress of Uncertainty
Body Intelligence – Alexander Technique
by Imogen Ragone

My last blog post – Lessons in Uncertainty – touched a nerve with a lot of people. It seems many of you can relate to the stress that uncertainty can create. Since I wrote it, I received and replied to so many comments, emails and other responses, and have thought a lot more about the stress that uncertainty creates. I realized there were three particular things that have been especially helpful to me in coping with uncertainty in the moment, and want to share those with you. Life is full of uncertainty – yet it feels more real or intense at certain times. In business there are many opportuni ..read more

Why I’m Not Walking When I Walk!
Body Intelligence – Alexander Technique
by Imogen Ragone

I thought to myself, “I’m not walking.” And to my surprise and delight, that was the moment when I became freer, easier, and more comfortable during my walk yesterday morning. I’ve been suffering with a minor foot injury for past couple of weeks and it can sometimes be painful when I walk on it. It’s doing LOADS better now, after receiving help at the Alexander Technique International Congress in Chicago last week. (Thanks, in particular, to John Macy, AT teacher and PT extraordinaire!) During my walk yesterday, however, I was aware of the sensitive spot each time my foot touched the ground ..read more

What Happens in a BodyIntelligence Class?
Body Intelligence – Alexander Technique
by Imogen Ragone

“I am free to have ease in my heart.” So said one of the participants in my class last Wednesday. It was the first of my local weekly BodyIntelligence small group classes. They are short classes – just an hour long. Yet, there is SO much I would like to impart. I know it’s impossible to share everything. And, I’ve learned, that it’s not helpful to throw too many ideas around at once. Not for me, and not for others. The classes are not sequential, but the learning is cumulative. You can come to as many as you wish. You may come to just one, though of course I hope you’ll come ..read more

A Skill for Life
Body Intelligence – Alexander Technique

I’ve just spent almost two weeks “back home” in the UK not thinking about my business at all. I wasn’t on holiday either. I was there to check in on and help out my parents who are experiencing various difficulties. And I confess I’m still feeling distracted and disconnected from my work. Christmas 2013 with my husband, my parents and my son, when we visited the UK under happier circumstances. Things like this happen. As a solo entrepreneur I am lucky to have flexibility in, and ownership of, my schedule. The downside is, when I am not working in or on my business, I’m also not making any mo ..read more

How the Alexander Technique Helps this Entrepreneur Run Her Business
Body Intelligence – Alexander Technique
by Imogen Ragone

Recently I had the pleasure of interviewing my friend, Amira Alvarez, on how the Alexander Technique helps her in the running of her business. I originally got to know Amira in her previous life as an Alexander Technique teacher, and more recently re-connected with her when I joined her Facebook group for women entrepreneurs, and participated in her excellent “Visibility Challenge.”  I was curious to find out how she is using the Alexander Technique these days. [Imogen] To get started, could you tell us a bit about your business. What do you do? [Amira] I’m a business coach and strategist ..read more
