Shout out to everyone who didn’t go outside today. Or yesterday. Or tomorrow.
While I’m at home asking ChatGPT to clarify whether I’m a hermit or a recluse, The Banker lives a whole life outside of our apartment just to come home and find me flaked out on the couch where he left me. (TB: “Actually, you were still in bed when I left.” Rude.)
I left the apartment exactly once this week. My sole outing ended with a 350 metre walk that Google Maps estimated would take me all of 5 minutes. A ridiculous underestimate. I can’t remember the last time I walked 350 consecutive metres, but 5 minutes is t ..read more

Last week I was fortunate to be in Milan during ECTRIMS, the world’s largest MS research conference. I’ve just returned from my whirlwind trip, and I’m a little late sharing the first episode of season 2 of the podcast. Sick Little Secret: The Pros And Cons Of Coming Out With MS dropped Friday while I was busy eating pizza, staring at ancient architecture, or folding my rollator in half to make it fit in the tiny elevator.
Yes, there were three stairs to get into this 4-star hotel, but at least they put in a railing?
Italy may have perfected pizza but their accessibility still needs work. I ne ..read more

Back To Reality
September’s here, and welcome to Pumpkin Spice and Get-Your-Shit-Together season. First stop, physio. I never feel better than after I’ve seen Emran, my osteopath, except for last week when Emran told me I have tennis elbow.
“Cool,” I said, “something sporty.”
“Not cool,” Emran said. “Your arms are weaker every time I see you. If you don’t do something about it, you’re going to be in trouble.” He then gestured to my rollator and reminded me that without functioning arms I won’t be able to walk. Rude.  ..read more

My latest MS meltdown happened inside a trendy motel in the middle of nowhere Northern Ontario. The Banker and I were on a 2-day mini-break, but the break I really needed was from my body, and my body was like, “Yeah, that doesn’t work for me. I’m saving up for one of those tiny Lizzo bags, so I’m actually working overtime. I’m on my way downtown right now to see if we can’t squeeze in another UTI. See you at 3 am for our nerve-pain appointment! ? ttfn! Just kidding! It’s time for your leg to spasm! PAY ATTENTION TO YOUR BURNING FEET!”
Anxious about my incapacity to do anything remotely vacat ..read more

Saying No To Stigma And Ableist Attitudes
Parenting with MS: Saying No To Stigma And Ableist Attitudes
When I was diagnosed with MS, it was four years before someone on my medical team volunteered any information about pregnancy and MS. I was in my late twenties when a bladder-and-bowel nurse specialist casually told me not to have kids.
My first reaction was, whatever, I don’t want kids anyway. My second thought was, how dare you, I’d be a great fucking mom. I knew enough about MS, and about my MS in particular, to know that it would have been safe and reasonable for me to have considered mot ..read more

love her or not, if you have MS you probably have an opinion about Selma Blair
The Truth About How The MS Community Feels About Selma Blair
We all remember the tricked-out cane that accompanied Selma Blair’s dramatic MS début at the Vanity Fair Oscars party in 2019. While the world gasped, the MS community rejoiced. Someone like her was someone like us. We felt the power of representation, a de-stigmatization of disability, and an increased awareness of the devastating disease we share.
From the outside looking in, you might think Selma is Queen of the MS Kingdom; and, to some she is. But a lo ..read more
