Vocabulary is undeniably a cornerstone of literacy, but the approach taken in order to teach vocabulary is the key. Research-based strategies emphasize the importance of teaching vocabulary in context rather than in isolation. This allows students to make meaningful connections between words and the world around them, enriching their understanding and application of language. But in this post, I’m getting real: I made a lot of mistakes before I found success with teaching vocabulary. It took me years to figure out what DIDN’T work before I found what DID. The Mistakes Along the Way In m ..read more

Integrating Primary Sources into Language Arts Lessons
Ideas By Jivey: For the Classroom

Although primary sources are most associated with teaching social studies, integrating them into language arts lessons will help students develop a deeper understanding of the content. If you’re unfamiliar with the term, primary sources are original materials that haven’t been filtered through interpretation. These could be photographs, manuscripts, recordings, interviews, newspaper clippings, or any other firsthand accounts from a particular time or event. Primary sources are unique tools that can bring history to life and promote critical thinking! However, their integration in the classroo ..read more

When the research behind the science of reading fundamentally changed the way teachers delivered their literacy instruction, teaching grammar was certainly not at the forefront of anyone’s mind. The biggest shift in teaching (especially in the upper grades) occurred with phonics instruction. However, it’s essential to look at all of the strands of language comprehension, too (not just word recognition), as Dr. Scarborough suggests with her reading rope model. Your students cannot become skilled readers if a single strand is weak. Teaching Grammar With Mentor Sentences Grammar IS an important ..read more

Teaching Text Structure With Picture Books

Text structure is the way authors organize expository information for a specific purpose. Aside from the fact that it’s a required reading standard, it’s important to teach students to identify text structures in order to improve comprehension of a text. Using quality texts as explicit models and teaching about the organization and keywords used with each type of structure helps develop student comprehension. You know I love using picture books as mentor texts, and yes, picture books work well for this skill, too! Teach Text Structures With Picture Books Teaching students to identify text str ..read more

I’m so excited about this week’s Workshop Wednesday! I absolutely LOVE finding and/or creating new math games for my kiddos to play, so today’s topic is: What math games do you and your kiddos love to play? Share and promote! The way I play in my room: no dice are needed…each set of partners gets a card (see above). I give them a range of numbers that I want them to find equations for (like 10-20). They must use order of operations ..read more
