Review: THE TRANSPORTS: A tale of exile and migration. Charter Theatre, Preston, Lancashire. We are in the era of the theatrical mega-musical — magical, multicoloured fantasies of spectacle, music and dance. The Transports is the exact opposite to such stage extravaganzas. Dark, dour and unremittingly grim, it rejects showbiz tropes and presents a grinding history lesson that tells us life stinks and then you die. The late Peter Bellamy’s 40-year-old  “folk opera” concept album about petty crime and pernicious punishment in the 18th Century has been revived as a touring musical-theatre ..read more

Folkie Phil here with news about The Last Hurrah!, our annual mix of music for the New Year. DOWNLOAD HERE As you may know, this show started several years ago and has been added to, changed, pruned, grown, evolved and expanded every year since.  The good news is I’ve just finished editing the latest edition. The less good news is that the show is becoming a real monster! It’s almost two hours long, and that means that it’s well over 100mb in size, half as big again as a normal FolkCast show. Now, I don’t want to fill up FolkCasters’ phones, computers and mp3 players with ..read more
