What is a birth doula?
A birth doula is a person who assists a mother through labor and delivery by providing support and information. A doula acts as an advocate for birthing people and empowers them to take control of the birthing process—both in terms of their own bodies, but also management and navigation of the experience with medical care providers.
Why it matters.
When you have a trusted doula by your side, you have someone to lean on emotionally and physically. A birth Doula can help coach a birthing person though the difficult parts of labor as well as provide comfort and focus ..read more

Let’s face it. We’ve all made New Year’s Resolutions that make us feel bad about ourselves because we only stay committed to them for about two weeks. This can ultimately lead to feelings of failure, guilt, and defeat, and cause us to engage in even unhealthier habits as a means of coping.
This year, commit to making resolutions that actually feel worthwhile and will positively impact your maternal and family wellbeing, not only physically, but emotionally and socially as well.
To make it easy to remember, I’ve arranged it into a nice little acronym that we can all re ..read more

It’s estimated that over 6 million children are afflicted with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, or ADHD, of which 40-60% may continue to suffer from it into adulthood. It is often missed in girls, and recently adult women are more commonly being diagnosed with it. This may be because perimenopausal hormonal decline worsens ADHD neurochemistry – just when many women find themselves juggling more responsibilities than ever. ADHD can look like anxiety and may be misdiagnosed as such. Additionally, it is highly heritable and runs in families.
Even though ADHD is a common me ..read more

As soon as the Fall season began, I noticed the holiday decor infiltrating stores, and my mind responded by busying itself with making plans: What will we do this year? Are we traveling? If so, we better book flights soon. How will we get all the shopping done? The thoughts spiral quickly towards all the details. The same stresses began presenting themselves with the folks I work with, who described being overwhelmed that their partner is “already” shopping while they can’t even think about it. Many people are noticing anxiety creeping in about extended family interactions. Do these tho ..read more

I’ve heard it many times before, and experienced it myself. Out of seemingly nowhere, there’s a shift; something in the body tightens, the stomach turns, fatigue may set in. The manifestation comes in many varieties, but the impact is shared - discomfort and uncertainty. What just happened? Research demonstrates that our body tracks and stores out-of-the-ordinary, stressful experiences in a different way.
When we encounter an especially stressful or unsettling event such as a trauma, the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis kicks into a higher gear. The HPA axis is where our ..read more

Our post today comes from Mother, Educator, and Community Organizer Nikki Booker.
Have you ever heard the old saying “It takes a village?”
The origin of this saying is unknown, but it is believed to come from the African culture hundreds of years ago. African villages would all chip in to take care of and raise children. Multiple mothers could feed one child from their breast and this was considered normal. Moms banded together to create an environment of love, acceptance and care. Moms of many generations were part of the village and the more experienced moms would guide the younger moms in ..read more

Our Guest Post today comes from jennifer Murdock, Founder of Wombpdx and Filmmaker (Peace on Earth- the Reality of Midwives). Thank you, Jennifer, for sharing your story with us!
I guess I should specify. My mother’s mental illness, my father’s, my daughter’s father and my own.
I didn’t expect to manage my daughter’s.
I could tell you the list of events she has had in her life to prove she has ‘suffered’. I could also tell you all of the mistakes I have made that add to that list. I could also say mom guilt has held me in its grasp for years. The visual of laying on the ground with the agony ..read more
