Thinking about ways to boost your child’s immune system? How about reducing the consumption of added sugar when possible?⠀⠀ One of the biggest challenges of consuming refined sugar is that it impacts the body’s immune response. Why might this happen? Sugar has been found to reduce phagocytic activity by half. What does this actually mean? Phagocytes are the cells that protect your body by literally ingest the pathogens (bacteria, foreign particles, & viruses). If they can’t do their job, these pathogens are free to roam your body and do the work they were meant to do. Research has shown th ..read more

Feeding your family, like many parenting responsibilities, is a lot of work. A profound moment in a recent lecture was when my professor reminded us (nutrition students) that: “In our culture almost everyone must compromise at some point around food.” I found this incredibly refreshing and a great reminder, especially in this beautiful Instagram world that can sometimes make you feel as if no one is making compromises. As parents we are all making compromises about food and so much more. There is now so much more quality information about how we can fuel our family. We can be empowered w ..read more

Mindfulness is a topic that has peaked my interest after hearing several well respected doctors do presentation calling on practitioners to realize the power of meditation as a tool in treating disease. These presentations ranged from Brain Health to Diabetes, and built a strong connection in it's ability to reduct stress, reduce inflammation, and improve or reverse the disease markers in patients. I am also following along as the research unfolds around the positive impacts mindfulness can have as a tool for children with ADHD. What we feed children is influencing what they like. Parents often work so hard to discover what their children’s favorite foods are. Instead of searching, help them discover a range of foods to develop their tastebuds for preferences for variety. If you expose children to a wide range of foods, over time they will develop a taste for a range of foods. Eventually they will develop preferences as they discover new foods. Remember it can take 8-10 exposures in different preparations in different settings to enjoy a new food. Try not to give up too soon. At an early age it is our job to help the ..read more

Invest in your child's first five years for a lifetime of healthy habits. Did you know that 90% of a child’s brain is developed by the age of 5? I did not know this until recently and I found this information powerful. The brain is far more impressionable in early life than in maturity. Therefore, the decisions and experiences your children have in the first 5 years can shape them for a lifetime. There have been many factors proven to impact the development in the first fives years, which includes: daily experiences, environment, sleep, parent responsiveness/interactions, nutrition, physi ..read more
