Yesterday was my first MLS Soccer assignment in over a year! And boy was I rusty. Since my last assignment, I have switched over to a mirrorless system (Nikon Z6ii). So the combination of getting used to the mirrorless camera “slideshow” effect when tracking action in the viewfinder paired to not shooting any soccer in over a year, I struggled a bit. 2020 has been a different year. My photography business mainly revolves around Seattle sports and automotive-related events, both of which have pretty much been canceled in 2020. Finally a dry photography assignment. This past Wednesday night the Sounders FC hosted the always challenging Real Salt Lake for the Western Conference Semi-Finals of the MLS Soccer playoffs. We had 3 photographers covering the game for USA Today/Imagn so we each covered the same section of the pitch the entire game. When both teams struggle, so do us photographers. The Bengals vs Seahawks game got off to a slow start which resulted in a delay in making any real good action photos. June 12th, 2019 - Seattle Sounders FC fall to the Portland Timbers in the US Open Cup matchup at Cheney Stadium. This is the first time shooting at Cheney Stadium, a baseball stadium for the AAA Seattle Mariners farm team, the Tacoma Rainiers. The stadium is very cool, however with a game that started at 7:30 on a very warm and humid evening, the pitch becomes very dark in sections one the sun goes down. Also, with this being a baseball field, the soccer pitch makes it awkward and tight to shoot the game with very little areas to shoot without being in the way of fans or video cameras. Another NFL season in the books. Last night was my last NFL assignment of 2018 and possibly the season. The Seahawks do have a slim chance of hosting the NFC Championships which I would cover, but to do so, they along with the Eagles would need to win out. Last night was one of those nights. The nights where you feel like you are on your game with sharp captures and quick reactions but the plays go the other way. When I say the other way I mean I pick a spot near the end zone and the ball/player ends up going to the other corner for the touchdown and I only get the back of the players jersey.
