Hello, please delete if this is not allowed. One of my students is legally blind.. We became frustrated with the WIAT 4 from Pearson. It is an exam used to measure intelligence a part of his triennial assessment. My student is very intelligent and has matured a lot in the last few years. He was eager to show what he can do. Unfortunately, the test is not accessible to him. The exam is administered on an iPad so there is a lot Pearson could have done to increase accessibility but none of those features are enabled. I called Pearson and they told me that there is nothing we can do. That is just ..read more

My son had a level 4 IEP and for four years we have tried numerous different programs and he has remained in crisis the whole time with four hospitalizations in the past 6 months. (We moved to a new state 9 months ago.) He is under severe emotional disturbance as well as adhd, speech, and multiple learning disabilities. He is almost 12 years old but academically functions as a preschooler. He does not have a cognitive delay though he has a medical diagnosis of autism and is being treated for pediatric bipolar disorder. We have tried so many different programs and schools. We tried online lear ..read more

Does anyone else ever feel like PWN is a waste of time? More than half of the parents will throw them straight in the trash and now IEP Go will not let me print PWN until the IEP has been finalized. All requirements surrounding PWN have made things more complicated than they should be in my opinion. submitted by /u/No-Trifle-7682 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Educational neglect ?

To add: the grandmother said before this even started that they thought the school would kidnap them. So it’s much more deeper than the child being “sick”. Another addition: when the child came to school last year grandma told us they needed help in the bathroom. When the student went they had a meltdown because they didn’t need in the bathroom. I don’t know if the grandma was trying to make sure look bad. My student Robert* had medical problems per grandma. Every note that signs that Robert can’t come to school for months is a DIFFERENT DOCTOR. It has never been the same. We have offered a n ..read more

Concerns about TeachTown special education curriculum

Does anyone here use TeachTown curriculum or have a child learning from it? I have concerns about the new TeachTown screen based curriculum that the school district does not seem to be taking seriously: 1. Numerous studies have shown that learning from a screen is not as effective for children as learning from tangible materials 2. The only two published studies done on TeachTown showed that it's not an effective curriculum; in fact in the largest study done, the students on TeachTown had worse language scores at the end of the year compared to the control group of students 3. TeachTown makes ..read more

Hello everyone. I have never used Reddit before, but I decided to use it for my research paper. I'm an RSP teacher/IEP case manager and a graduate student. For a research paper my teammate and I are writing a research paper on language discrimination in special education. We want to learn from the experiences of parents who do not speak English and want to know how they are treated for not speaking the language. We live and work in areas that have a huge Hispanic population, and many of the school staff are Hispanic and bilingual, so the experiences at our work locations are different than th ..read more

Hi everyone! I’m going to be starting my internship soon and have some general questions. Also I know that state to state and school to school these things vary :) 1) how much of your day is spent actually with children versus doing other things? 2) about how much unpaid time do you spend daily? 3) when you are with kids, how big is your group size? Or do you typically coteach/ assist in the classroom? 4) how often do you have meetings with parents (aside from IEP meetings), and how long do they take? Do you typically initiate these or do parents? 5) how much homework do you assign? 6) does y ..read more

Hey everyone, I hope this is ok to post this here, but I am mother to a young boy on the autism spectrum, and I am in school currently working on building a prototype for a website that aims to simplify the process of creating social stories for children on the autism spectrum. I believe this tool could be incredibly valuable for parents, educators, and therapists who work with these children.
