Someone was telling me about a problem they had with a student who kept talking over other students and interrupting the classroom. Heard some great ideas on how to handle the situation and thought I would share them with you guys. The Talking Teddy: Basically, the idea is to have a stuffed animal, "The Talking Teddy" in the class. Only the person with the Talking Teddy is allowed to talk and whenever you're done talking, you may pass off the Teddy. I love this one because it's so tangible and physical so the idea of taking turns. Role-playing: Deliberately acting out taking turns. Maybe go ..read more

I’m starting a position next year that is brand new to me (15 years in education but transitioning into an intervention-based role that is more SPED) and I’m going to have transient placements for K-12, which means I could have a kinder in the same class as a 9th grader, etc. I saw my room today and it is HUGE and I think I could design it to make multiple areas that would be age and area appropriate, but I’ll be honest, I’ve been a 9-12 elective teacher and don’t know what little kids need but also don’t want to make the room too elementary and lose the respect of older kids, and I don’t wan ..read more

I'm not a special ed teacher. If I'm not allowed to post here, I apologize. I work as a service coordinator for a government-sponsored agency. Basically, my job is to conduct functional screens of students with disabilities, develop individual service plans, and help connect children and their families to the disability-related services they need. I'm relatively new to this job and am still learning the ropes. Part of the functional screen is that I have to ask parents about their child's toileting abilities. The functional screen addresses independent toilet use, diapers, and catheters. Howe ..read more

Hi everyone, my school is using an outdated version of the brigance. The scoring tool is not online anymore but i was wondering if anyone has anything they use to score these an easier way? Or a link to something I can use to input my scores? My principal is saying to just use the scoring for the IED III that’s available online but I don’t think the questions match….thank you all! submitted by /u/Content_Degree_1943 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Hi! Thinking about making the jump to a self contained classroom. In our district these are max 10 students with an educational assistant. I’ve been a resource teacher in a gen ed school for 3 years a while ago and 3 years now. I used to be an ESL pull out teacher for almost a decade. (I’ve been teaching 21 years and have taught JK-4 in the classroom) I would love to know what you love about the job and what I should be ready for. Thank you!!!! submitted by /u/silverwlf23 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

My student is asking for classroom breaks too frequently

I work with a 4 year old with an IEP on a one-on-one basis (in New York the role is called SEIT-special ed itinerant teacher). He definitely becomes dysregulated and sometimes when this happens he pushes other students. His OT has taught him to advocate for himself and ask for breaks when he needs them; it's pretty obvious to me at this point when he's becoming dysregulated because he starts moving from activity to activity during free play and not staying at any one station (which I don't usually allow; I use a a timer and have him stay for at least 4 mins.) The problem is that once he becom ..read more

My four year old is autistic with lower supports needs, has moderate/severe hearing loss, and has dwarfism. She is in a “peer inclusive preschool classroom” through our public school district, which means it’s comprised of mostly “typical” education students and a handful of kids receiving sped services that specifically have a ASD diagnosis. One of the requirements is being eligible for this type of classroom is being designated as needing the least restrictive classroom, which she is based on her evaluation. All of her weekly reports from her teacher and aides seem to be okay, we have never ..read more

What level of violence do you tolerate?

Sorry for the bad title, I don't like my wording either. This is partially a vent piece though I'm trying to ask advice. What I am asking, is on a daily basis at school, what level of violent behavior are you exposed to, and what is your breaking point? Do you send kids home? Quit your job? I am a para in a middle school and we have a student who is very physically violent. He isn't very big compared to adults who work with him, but he isn't little either. He likes to scratch deep, especially faces, and bite and kick. We've gotten some PPE, such as scratch guard sleeves and eye protection, bu ..read more

ODD in Baseball

I am the team mom for a 5-6 year old little league baseball team. We have one child who I believe is ODD, he hits, bites, pushes, calls names, picks on other kids. He gets easily annoyed by the other kids, blames the other kids, he just seems like a very angry person. It seems like he has 3-4 kids that he repeatedly picks on. He has hit my child multiple times (once with a bat). The children on the team are not intentionally provoking him. One child was humming and that set him off. One child looked at him and that set him off. One child was standing to close to him and that set him off. We h ..read more

Help with reading student

Hi, I’m working with a student with several academic goals and a behavior goal. He has been diagnosed ODD but no SLD for his reading, at a 3rd/4th grade level and exiting 8th grader. He has a habit of skipping or mumbling words that are new or difficult. He does not attempt to decode and struggles with this skill so much (plus extremely below average spelling) that I was very suspicious of dyslexia. The problem is balancing correcting reading with ODD. Say a session is going well, he’s reading aloud with 90% accuracy. Then I underline skipped/mispronounced sections and he goes on a tangent ab ..read more
