Wide cM Range for Known Relationship

I have a very interesting new match at Ancestry. It is a maternal first cousin once removed. Nominal DNA sharing is 425 cM. I only share 144 cM on 8 segments with largest segment of 38 cM. My brother shares 463 cM on 17 segments with largest segment of 79 cM. This is his 2nd highest cM match at Ancestry. This once again shows that the amount of DNA shared for a known relationship can be in a very wide range. It also shows that having a sibling DNA test provides useful information about shared matches. Shared cM Project 4.0 shows a range of 102 cm to 980 cM for first cousin once removed ..read more

Hello! A simple question : A person belongs to the same branch as me (Chromosome Y), but we don't have the same terminal SNP on Yfull. I share with a SNP connection, but not STR with him. Does this mean that we have a distant relationship, but not 400-500 years away? On the other hand, I have others who are in the same branch as me, with a different terminal SNP, and I share an SNP and STR connection with them. Thanks for your reply ..read more

However, once you reach their settlement, you can take on another quest, which is to find and recover a lost Sea People relic. In order to retrieve the relic, you need to follow the treasure map. R1b-L389: Eastern Branch of R1b-L761

IMHO, all of R1b-M343 is eastern in origin. By "eastern" I mean east of peninsular Europe. The closer to the R1b-M343 root, the farther east, in my opinion. Pretty obviously, it seems to me, R1b-PF6323 was the first R1b branch to move wholesale into peninsular Europe. If you're interested in a discussion of its unique history and trajectory, see this thread at the GenArchivist web site. This thread, however, is about R1b-L389, which is evidently eastern in origin (remember my definition of "eastern" above) and hung back out of peninsular Europe a lot longer than PF6323 did - mostly until the ..read more

Over the last number of years, when I receive my weekly My Heritage DNA matches, I see many familiar names - names of people in different family trees keep appearing. Clearly, there are some real connections to my family and these familiar names. So what is the next step - the strategy to use to try to connect these quite disparate list to my genealogy? I would appreciate hearing about strategies you have used to start to tie the DNA extended family together ..read more

Unexpected Y37 DNA result!

I have been doing family history research for some time, and, using services such as FamilySearch.org, Ancestry etc, and through my own on-ground efforts, have traced my family tree back in most lines up to 10 generations. All of those generations are Italian. One line, my paternal line, only goes back three generations, to my father’s father’s father ie a greatgrandfather. He was an ‘esposto’, left as a newborn at a hospital in Italy in 1836 with no details of his birth parents. In an effort to try and trace his history back further, I have recently taken a Y37 DNA test with FamilyTreeDNA (a ..read more
