We reached out to Heather Grey, a talented young producer from Salt Lake City. He enlightened us on the hip-hop scene in the Beehive State and discussed his craft and future endeavors. Get to know him: You’re from Salt Lake City. No disrespect, but for those of us who have never been there, one can only think of skiing, Mormons, Karl Malone’s big rigs, John Stockton’s tight-ass shorts and maybe a dash of racism. Tell us about the hip-hop scene in SLC, and by all means, let us know where we can buy weed there.. John Stockton’s shorts haha, that’s hilarious. I definitely know what you mean thoug ..read more

Top 10 Albums 2019

Another decade ends, the decadence continues. What a confusing and misleading year, in so many ways, but still we all heard some incredible music (right?). Let’s get into the Top 10 Albums 2019, but first a few honorable mentions. Thom Yorke put out an album, Rapsody tapped into something awesome. Tha God Fahim and Mach-Hommy deserve a shout. Willie The Kid continues to throw Michigan Molotovs into the fire. Producer Heather Grey may be the underground’s next-up. I’ll be checking for more Billy Woods in the 20/20. From what I hear, someone named Lizzo had herself a year.. Detroit artists had s ..read more

Music To Sustain The Summer Reign: MadGibbs, Big Shoes, Khruangbin, Dibiase

Dearest Summer, Changing careers is hard, but I’m workinthefuckonit. In the meantime, I continue to cultivate the dope shit. Here’s what I’ve distilled of late.. The second volume from Madlib & Freddie Gibbs, Bandana, rates out at a solid 4 mics. Kanye, moronic genius that he is, apparently passed on these Madlib compositions. Features from Pusha T., Killer Mike, Black Thought and Mos Def are obvious to reach for. But the best track for me is “Fake Names”: While Bandana might very well end up the top hip-hop album of 2019, a sleeper contender for that distinction has to be Big Tone & ..read more

Top 10 Albums 2018: One Writer’s Take

It’s that time again. This year, we discovered that over 45% of Americans are garbage people. Politicians rank in the 99th percentile of garbage people by perpetuating a deeply flawed system that runs on greed, racism and forked-tongue platitudes. If you’re reading this you’re probably part of the 55%. In truth, we’re all capable of pure good and egregious evil, and fuck politics anyway. There’s no patch of land left where we can fully unplug and get back to our mammalian essence, but music, despite it’s modern pervasive ease of access, is still a calm for the savage beast in us. Here are the ..read more

So much for the Blue Wave, more like a Blue Fade. Not that the Democrats really promote the interests of the common man either. This country is deeply racist and vapid and the system is corrupt and fractured. We’ve known this for some time. There are a lot of good people in the USA but a lot of evil, nativist fuckheads, too. I’d like to focus on positives like Michigan legalizing marijuana or the record number of women elected to Congress. But America was founded on manifest destiny (native genocide and slave labor) and the current power structure is a result of this legacy. Therefore, I’m wor ..read more

Built To Fade, “The Cure”

Almost five years after the release of To Dust, Built To Fade dropped a new song and video: Kno of Cunninlynguists is the band leader with Zoë Wick and Dane Ferguson back in the mix. Danish vocalist Fjer, a part of the Quintic/QN5 extended crew for a few years now, provides additional vocals. When reached for comment, Kno had this to say: “We’re involving Fjer on a good portion of the album, Anna Wise is no longer recording with us. No release date as of yet, though it’s on the way. We’re also re-pressing the first album on vinyl this month.” Sidebar: Even though proven assholes Facebook and ..read more

Here’s Some Good Music For Otherwise Sour Times (2018)

Some people like good music. Some people don’t. Some people don’t want to hear other people’s opinions about what constitutes good music. After all, what’s good to me, someone else may deem to be a steaming hot dumpster filled with industrial garbage. But enough about Brett Kavanaugh.. For starters, Roc Marciano’s sneak album, Behold A Dark Horse. Why, here’s a song from it, so you may enjoy the lush, psychedelic sample (any leads?) and a wicked feature from Black Thought*: I posted the large version so you may gaze upon the apocalyptic, Halloween-themed artwork. And it dovetails so nicely in ..read more
