Duke Energy customers in North Carolina will soon have access to rebates worth up to $9,000 for home solar and battery systems. In May 2024, Duke Energy is opening applications to the PowerPair pilot program that offers a one-time incentive for residential solar and battery installations. Pairing solar with battery storage provides backup power during grid outages and can improve the economic benefits of home solar given the state’s recent cuts to net metering compensation. The PowerPair pilot will be open to 60,000 kW of solar capacity which will serve a minimum of 6,000 households. Solar inc ..read more

The $7 Billion Reason to Go Solar in 2024

Tax season is a drag — unless you recently installed solar. This year, US homeowners are expected to claim an estimated $7 billion in tax credits for the solar systems they installed in 2023. (And that doesn’t even include tax credits for home batteries!) The federal solar tax credit is worth 30% of the installed cost of a residential solar system, with no maximum amount. So, whether you spend ten thousand or fifty thousand on a solar system, Uncle Sam is offering to eat 30% of the cost. This tax credit was extended through 2032 with the passage of the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA). However, t ..read more

Low-income households in California may soon have access to one of the best solar and battery incentives in the country and an opportunity to drastically lower their energy costs. On November 2, the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) proposed rules for allocating $280 million for the Self-Generation Incentive Program (SGIP). Historically, this program has been restricted to rebates for battery storage. However, the CPUC proposal would increase the battery incentive and create a solar rebate for eligible low-income households. Keep in mind, this is only a proposal at this point ..read more

With residential solar incentives eroding across the country, New York City is one of the few places in the US getting more solar-friendly in 2024 thanks to new zoning regulations and a huge upgrade to the city’s solar property tax abatement. We get it – tax abatements and zoning regulations aren’t the sexiest topics in the world. But for NYC homeowners, they provide thousands of dollars in additional solar incentives and open up cast amounts of real estate for installing panels. So, we checked in with T.R. Ludwig, CEO and Founder of Brooklyn SolarWorks and Brooklyn Solar Canopy Co., to see wh ..read more

NYC Solar Property Tax Abatement Extended Through 2035. Here’s How It Works.

With the stroke of a pen by Governor Hochul, the New York City Property Tax Abatement has been extended through 2035 and expanded to offer a maximum incentive value of 30% of eligible solar and battery expenditures. This property tax abatement is one of several solar incentives that make New York City a great market for residential solar and a rare example of a solar incentive increasing over time. Previously, the abatement reduced the property tax burden of solar owners by up to 20% of the price paid for the system (aka “eligible expenditures”). Beginning in 2024, it is now worth up to 3 ..read more

What’s a Good Price for Rooftop Solar in 2024?
Solar.com | Solar Learning Center
by Sam Wigness

At its core, rooftop solar is a way to pre-purchase 25 years of electricity in order to hedge against ever-rising utility rates – quite similar to buying bulk coffee grounds instead of individual Venti Lattes from Starbucks. The return on this long-term investment depends on a handful of key factors, including the price of the solar system itself. After all, the cost of your solar system is your line in the sand that says “This is how much I’m paying for electricity.” Like anything else, homeowners want to know they’re paying a good price for solar and, by extension, electricity. So, in this a ..read more

Nothing screams celebrity status like a big old mansion that has more bathrooms than there are Harry Potter books. But just like private jet emissions, massive homes contribute to the outsized carbon footprint of the world’s rich and famous. After all, heating and cooling a 10,000-square-foot home — not to mention powering multiple kitchens, water heaters, climate-controlled wine cellars, EV charging, pools and hot tubs, and god knows what else — requires a lot more electricity than the average 2,500 square foot home. So, we put together a list of 10 celebrities who could massively reduce ..read more
