Great-grandfather had a child no one knew about

For the last year or so I've been researching my family tree. I just ordered the death printout of my great-grandfather and it said that he had a child that was 60 years old when he died. Our family knew nothing about this as it was before he met my great-grandmother. Here is the information I know: William Albert Fowler (my great-grandfather) was born on 23rd January 1907. He was born (I think) in County Armagh (Northern Ireland). His parents were William Fowler and Minnie McBride. William joined the army in 1924. I believe he lied about his age so he could join a year earlier at 17. I found ..read more

What does this notation on a ship's alien passenger manifest mean (arriving NYC)?

Instead of completing the entries for "able to read" "nationality" "race" etc., they wrote a long entry reading "Court of Orange County 6/21/30 Pass. 320144 at Wash 10/26/30 Paper No 3335590" My guess is this means naturalized on 6/21/1930 at Orange County Court, and then received a passport issued in Washington DC on 10/26/1930, and passport number is 3335590? Orange County Court naturalization records are not yet indexed online; I've emailed the New York NARA office to ask if their indices show anything. Anything I might do to research the passport? submitted by /u/VonJoeV [visit reddit ..read more

Mystery Birthplace: Tulan, Poland?

I have a request for our geographically minded sleuths. Can you help me locate "Tulan" Poland? So far, I've come up empty. The person this birthplace connects to is a Julius Frohlich, born June 6, 1896. He reports his birthplace as "Tulan" on his American WWII draft card. Thank you to anyone with an idea on this one. Notes: In 1896 "Poland" as we know it today did not exist as an independent nation-state. It was divided among Austria (Austria-Hungary), Prussia (German Empire), and Russia. I did find a Tulan in Russia but it's far too far east to have ever been considered "Poland." submitted ..read more

Trying to find my Portuguese ancestry

Hi, I’ve been researching my Portuguese ancestors, and so far I’ve found nothing. I’ve been using ancestry, and I haven’t found any Portuguese names at all. My mom told me that my dad's family is Portuguese from his mom's and dad's sides. We don’t talk to them, so I can’t get any help from them. I don’t think she’s lying bc her family looked down on them bc they were Portuguese and French, sadly. A lot of my dad's ancestors were English and French. A lot of the names were mostly English. I don’t know what to look for and it seems like a weird thing to lie about. Any help is appreciated. Edit ..read more

Looking for help finding records for Lower Silesian ancestors

Hi! I'm hoping that someone might be able to help me navigate through the maze that is Silesian/Prussian records. I'm trying to find out more about my ancestors from Lower Silesia before they emigrated to Frelsberg, Texas in 1855. Specifically, I'm looking for birth/baptism and marriage records for my great, great grandparents Ernst and Clara Laake, in hopes that I can track down their parents, siblings, and so on. Ernst Laake was born 11 July 1815 in Baerdorf, Silesia, son of Carl and Caroline Laake (who was possibly from Glogau, Silesia). Clara (nee. Hilgner) Laake was born 11 May 1817 in ..read more

Is this plausible?

I'm basically making this to see how plausible you guys think my theory is. I feel like the version of events I've got might be reaching. I don't know, sometimes I think we all need to be brought back down to earth when researching our ancestors, or just have our research somewhat validated in our minds? Sorry, this is a long one? Anyway, so my 3rd great-grandfather (John) had been a pretty hard man to trace. The earliest record I have of him is his marriage certificate, on which his father is listed as Benjamin. On the 2 confirmed censuses I have with him, John's birth year is 1837. However ..read more

Newfoundland Death Certificates?

Hi there. I was wondering if there is a place online where I can search through Newfoundland death certificates in a sort of database? Or if I need to call up the central archives centre in Newfoundland and have them help me? My ancestor Michael Thomas Cronin only died in 1921 in Kelligrews. So it seems like their death records should be public records. Anyone here have any ideas? I’m hoping that his death certificate will have his parents names on it as he was born in 1835 Ireland. submitted by /u/Simple-Tangerine839 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Happy Friday everyone! I'm researching an Edwards family in Spencer County Indiana, early 1800's. The head of this family is David Edwards Sr. His will, written in 1820 mentions that he has a daughter named Edith White. I do not know when Edith was born, and I don't know who her husband Mr. White is. Then I have an indenture, written in 1823, that list several of Edith's siblings mentioned on the 1820 will. In that indenture, it list Edith being married to a Thomas Parker. So all the confirmable information I have of her is: at some point Edith married a Mr. White, and he died and she married ..read more

Trying to get my mom on a cruise, they’re requiring a birth certificate from NY

As the title says, I’m trying to take my mom on a cruise in September of this year, it’s a closed loop cruise so she needs either a passport or an enhanced (real id) license from WA (where we live). I don’t think she could get a passport that quickly so we started looking into the enhanced license, unfortunately she was born in NY and adopted back in the 60s and needs a copy of her birth certificate, she no longer has a copy of her birth certificate. She called and NY says 9 months wait. Do we have any other options that we can look into before the end of September? I’d hate to go on the crui ..read more
