by Kelly O'Neill “Is my treatment working?” “I’m not doing well, but my labs are always fine.” “My doctor says I’m in remission, but I don’t agree.” — a few of the worries that people with rheumatoid disease (PRD) often share. For years RPF has helped people with worries like these to be informed about research, options, and strategies to manage the disease. Recently on the blog, we discussed the protein called 14-3-3η first recognized about 14 years ago. Research has shown it has a key role in the processes of joint damage and progression of rheumatoid disease. Let’s look at how it can specif ..read more

3 Ways the 14-3-3η Blood Test Helps in RA
Rheumatoid Patient Foundation
by Kelly O'Neill

For the past several years, I've followed the research about the test for 14-3-3η (or 14-3-3eta) and talked about it with patients on Facebook and on my blog. Let’s take a closer look at how the test can be used in RA and why it’s so valuable. The 14-3-3η protein’s role in RA was first recognized in 2007. As part of a family of regulatory proteins the “eta” family member was present at a significantly higher level in the synovial fluid and serum of people with RA compared to those without. Since then, a simple blood test to detect 14-3-3η has become available. Interestingly, in both early and ..read more

Unprecedented Steps to Progress for People with Rheumatoid Disease
Rheumatoid Patient Foundation

by Kelly O'Neill During 2020 one of the most common terms has been unprecedented. I’ve heard people joke about how often it’s used. Today, we follow that trend. For many people whose work requires that they travel, this unprecedented time has meant big changes and even setbacks. This past spring, Shannon Young and I were scheduled to go participate in a CME (continuing medical education) project that is very aligned with our RPF mission to improve the lives of people with rheumatoid disease (RD). You probably know that one of our goals under that mission has always been to improve clinical car ..read more

To our RPF family, We are in an unprecedented time that can be very stressful and scary for us all, whether we have an autoimmune disease or not. We are dedicated to bringing you facts you need—but also to encouraging our community through this time.  As we immersed ourselves in the factual information, even we struggled to stay encouraged. We are human too and this situation is daunting. Yet, we are sure of these things: Knowledge is power. We know this from studying our own diseases. Find balance. Educate yourself so that your actions will be as safe as possible, but avoid information ..read more

By Shannon Young, Executive Director of the Rheumatoid Patient Foundation When your doctor calls at 6 p.m. on a Friday, it’s either really good news, or really bad news.  Eight years ago at 6 p.m. on Friday, April 13, 2012, my doctor called with the news that I have Rheumatoid Disease. This was the culmination of several weeks of excruciating pain, denial that I had something serious going on and had reached the point where I couldn’t even pull up a sheet when I woke up cold in the middle of the night.   My onset was sudden and brutal after a complete hysterectomy in late January. I ..read more
