My daughter and I were talking about the Chronicles of Narnia the other day, and she asked me what I thought was better - the books or the movies. We talked about how movies bring to your eyes what was only before in your mind. But books are just magical. As you read, you imagine. You learn. You wonder. And even as she struggled to want to read early on, her reading now has meaning because she's learned that it unlocks so many things for her! Street signs and birthday cards, stories and scripts! As teachers and therapists, we want to find ways to UNLOCK reading for unique learners, ALL learne ..read more

The Thanksgiving song | Ben Rector One of my favorite Thanksgiving Songs of all time is Ben Rector's "The Thanksgiving Song." It's a song about celebrating with family and friends, and the heart of gratitude. I've created a few FREE printables to go along with it to facilitate conversations about holiday traditions and thankfulness! There's a coloring sheet - draw your family traditions or something you're thankful for while you listen! Question cards - tape the the bottom of a frame drum and pass it around while the music plays. When the music stops, the person who ends up with it reads the ..read more

My middle started Kinder this year... which is just crazy to type. When I asked her what her favorite part of school was, can you guess what she said? "Playing with my friends!" I just love how quickly she calls her brand new buddies, "friends." It really is a sweet thing about the start of a new school year! Making new friends. Then there's my oldest. Going to school isn't as easy for her, and it takes a minute for her to warm up! But, finding old friends again after a summer away is a huge comfort to her at school! Isn't that the way it is with some of the kids we work with? Some just jump ..read more

It's winter. The kids are stuck inside. Soooo many wiggles. Do their brains. Do the staff. Do YOURSELF - a favor! Start with movement songs! My favorite movement props during the winter are.... Blue Canopy Scarf, like this one! Play a wintry song and watch the scarf as it moves to the music! Place fairy lights on top and look underneath! Felt or Plastic Snowflakes, like these! Explore different textures, watch them go up and down on a parachute, then run around and pick them up. Put them back on top and start again! and Indoor Snowballs, like these! Throw while the music plays and... freeze ..read more
