Running this website – with much more than crime, there is constant work in staying up to date. Take postcodes for example – every 3 months, there are new postcodes, retired postcodes and postcodes that seemingly come back to life. Here they are if you are interested. We’ve also just updated Road Accidents for Calendar 2022 using the official Department for Transport data. It’s a bit depressing that road accidents have stopped falling over the last few years – Covid interim excepted. I can remember nearly 10 years ago writing in a paper that automated braking – if not driverless cars – would d ..read more

The limits of the crime rate metric – only use with hefty caveats

I’ve written about this before but it’s worth pointing out again. There are real shortcomings in trying to compare different areas by crime rate. It really doesn’t give you a clear picture and leads to huge distortions. So what is crime rate again you say? Crime rate is measured by the number of crimes in a given area for a given period of time per 1000 residents. The key point here is that crime rate would be more meaningful if residents in said area actually didn’t leave their area, to go shopping or to work etc. If people did that, then the daytime and nighttime population would be exactly ..read more

Where are the vehicle crime hotspots and have they changed?
UK Crime Stats Blog

As someone who had items stolen from his car recently – I left it open and my prescription glasses and cheap scratched sunglasses were taken – I wanted to know more about it and if the hotspots had changed in the last 10 years. To answer this question, I decided to measure it using total vehicle crimes by postcode sector per hectare. This allows us to make equivalent judgements as postcode sectors like postcode districts vary a lot in size. To my surprise the hotspots had changed. Measured by crimes per hectare per postcode sector – a unique feature available to UKCrimeStats subscribers, we ha ..read more

How should you fairly compare crime in different postcode districts?
UK Crime Stats Blog

This is a question that needs to be asked because the UK’s approx. 2,500 postcode districts vary massively in size – from 2.33 hectares in London WC1A to 85,165 hectares in LD3 in Wales. And they vary just as hugely in residential and daytime population. For example, CR0 in Croydon, London has a residential population of 153,812 and UB11 in Hillingdon has just 2. The answer – I would suggest – it to measure crime or type of crime total per hectare. That is a unique feature to UKCrimeStats. You can run a report and it will show you the top 100 highest/lowest , total crime, crime rate, crimes pe ..read more

So what is your area? In the UK, when people say “my area,” they are generally referring to the geographical region or neighborhood where they live or work. On UKCrimeStats, it’s easiest to search by postcode or postcode district (the first half of a postcode) or just your town or neighbourhood name. The safety of your community is paramount, and one way to gauge the level of safety in your area is by consulting a crime rating. Here at UKCrimeStats, we’ve been doing crime mapping and working with heatmaps since 2011. UKCrimeStats subscribers find it useful to run heatmaps over their chosen area, their chosen time period and by all or any particular crime type. See video here for details. It’s important to understand though that the UK has a rich tradition of crime mapping, with the first recorded instance of using maps to analyze crime patterns occurring in the mid-19th century.Crime mapping is a technique that has been used in the UK for many years to help the Police/Local Councils/Concerned Parties identify areas ..read more
