Kiwi Rail 2023-24 Plan for the Waikato and Te Huia

The rail network in the Waikato and Bay of Plenty has avoided 397,867 truck trips, saving 32.7million litres of fuel and avoiding the emission of 87,949 tonnes of CO2 (from Image below). The CO2 reduction is equivalent to removing half the current numbers of petrol-fuelled cars from Hamilton’s* streets for a year. KiwiRail recently updated the Waikato Regional Transport Committee (Monday18 September 2023) on the state of the Waikato and Bay of Plenty rail network: KiwiRail now has ‘all bridges on the Auckland – Tauranga route ready for future axle-load increase’, and has planned business cases ..read more

Whitiora Bridge is the most inefficient Hamilton Bridge
Hamilton Urban Blog

The actual number of cars crossing would be the same if it still had two standard-width lanes with cycle lanes each side. The narrowing of the west-bound lane on the eastern end reduces the number of cars a lane can move (see ‘hard working lanes’ post). Over the past eight years Whitiora Bridge and Victoria Bridge have had similar motor vehicles per day (vpd) counts. Victoria moves many more people with it ..read more

The Meteor bus Bridge
Hamilton Urban Blog

The Meteor bus service is the latest ‘frequent service’ to get people moving across Hamilton. The route the Meteor takes allows transferring to other services at multiple stops either side of the Victoria Bridge, and it is this river crossing that is going to limit growth. There will now be over 15 buses per hour crossing into Hamilton Central at the morning peak traffic period, which justifies planning for a bridge with a dedicated bus lane (see last paragraph). The latest plan is for a new bridge that links Clyde Street directly across the river to Anglesea Street over the top of Radnor Str ..read more
