How has your career grown since entering the landscape architecture field? My route to becoming a landscape architect was slightly circuitous — I entered the field after a decade of working as a research biologist. I had a pretty successful start to a career in science, but something didn’t quite add up and, with the diligence of a good researcher, I went in search of a new direction. To make a long story short, I started at Arterra as a (very) junior designer, while still at school retraining as a landscape architect. It was pretty much straight from a lab bench to a drafting table. There wa ..read more

What is your favorite part of working in landscape architecture? The potential to make positive contributions to the world. What motivates you? The smiles and looks of wonder that good designs will put on people's faces. What inspired you to pursue a career in landscape architecture? I've always had a deep appreciation for nature, and I've always had a good sense of space. When I learned that there was a profession that blended art, nature, space-making and beyond? I was sold — and I haven't looked back since. What are you excited to be working on? The geometric stone and wood forms that are ..read more

How has your career grown since entering the landscape architecture field? I have learned so much over the past few years. I’ve had the opportunity to work with a wide range of clients on a wide range of project types. Each project is a huge learning experience, because even the projects that seem similar at a glance are actually very different. I’ve also had the chance to grow as a designer and coworker, slowly evolving from student to more experienced student who is able to (hopefully) share some of my knowledge with my workmates. What motivates you?I’m motivated by all the bad design in th ..read more

How has your career grown since entering the landscape architecture field? My career has grown in many ways, but probably the most significant is my understanding of the relationship between design and construction. Not just how things get built, but the role that construction plays as a design advances in stages. In addition to the nuts and bolts, another key area of growth for me was learning how to be a professional in this industry, something that my first boss and mentor (Rick, shoutout!) is largely responsible for. I've learned the value of not taking oneself too seriously, being a good ..read more

How has your career grown since entering the landscape architecture field? My knowledge has grown immensely since joining Arterra. Every month I feel like I know twice as much as I knew the month prior. I’m slowly getting closer and closer to being able to execute exactly what’s in my head. What motivates you?I am motivated by parallel creative fields—art, fashion, furniture, architecture, graphic design. Seeing what’s trending there, and seeing how we can make those types of ideas apply to our field. I love careful and inventive craftsmanship, and pushing limitations of a material. I love in ..read more

How has your career grown since entering the landscape architecture field? Since starting my career, I have had the fortune of exploring both the creation of large public parks and small private gardens. While working at each scale has been extremely rewarding, I have found that residential design provides a special connection to the landscape that is not as attainable in the public realm. What motivates you?Art, design, music, people, ecology, food, everything! I love the practice of landscape architecture for many reasons, but one is its ability to bring life to a site. Each new project pre ..read more
