How to keep a city connected after closing parts of the CBD to through traffic?

I saw a video from Street Films about Ghent, Belgium where it discussed how the city was divided into different sections where cars were blocked from traveling between them unless they went onto an outer ring road. This seems to be a really good idea for reducing traffic and I would love to see something like this in my city, but I am wondering how this affects people who travel through the city centre to get to the other side of the city. If this makes their commute by car longer and there are no other practical options to get to work, this would make some members of the city have to move jo ..read more

Why are some US regions building and some aren't?

Might be a stupid question. But how is the South & Southwest building a ton of housing, while the Rust-Belt & Northeast is struggling to or barely building? Is it because the land is so cheap out there? Or maybe you don't encounter as much NIMBYs? Construction costs? I am just struggling to understand why, it's not like there is no-demand for housing on the Northeast & some parts of the Rustbelt. Assuming this is also a similar story going on with the Westcoast. submitted by /u/Beneficial-Ad-497 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Shelterforce- one of the few organizations discussing urban planning without the incessant push that it’s just supply and demand

Who here is following shelterforce? They talk a lot about housing and they haven’t bought into the strong towns incessant discussion that we just need more capitalist policies and developers to fix things. Anyone looked at Vancouver lately? They bought into changing codes and the build build build model. They still experienced extreme levels of pricing increasing and are experiencing issues around affordability, an increase in homelessness, ect. Shelterforce on the other hand isn’t really doing this. Would love a discussion on this. submitted by /u/cannotberushed- [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

ELI...not 5, but maybe ELI15: Why is it often suggested that adding more traffic lanes (typically on a highway) won't improve traffic flow too much?

This certainly can't be true across the board. For example, going from 2 to 3 lanes would certainly allow for better traffic flow considering the right lane is by default occupied slower transportation trucks, leaving one for passing and other travelers. I've always seen that adding more lanes won't improve transit times. Is this a diminishing returns type of idea? submitted by /u/Odd-Bat4940 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

I need help! I’m a Strategic Urban Planner and have a unique opportunity to start an organisation whether it be a startup/or not for profit and I want it to relate to planning. I have so many ideas and issues I want to tackle around housing, climate change, transport, racial equity.. but often find that planning issues are soo broad. I don’t have a technical background, so not good at data/tech etc but possibly an issue that I can use my platform to raise awareness about or even help finance projects at a community level or do more consulting, leadership training, community engagement on… Som ..read more
