by Hemed Jumaa – Operations Manager  We have all reasons to thank God for having reached the New Year, 2024! I understand all of us had different experiences in 2023, could be good, bad or a combination of both but it is all part of life. I would like to take this opportunity to share a short reflection of 2023 and moving forward, our 2024 expectations at the GLO. In 2023, we continued with our efforts of reintegrating children back to their families/ communities and developing the therapy department as a way of complying with the new care reform policies on how children are to be cared ..read more

2023 was a great year, full of blessings and great achievements. This is a year that we had visitors and volunteers visiting our school. Starting from Domi who carried out assessment on the teaching staff and with a great wealth in teaching, she was of great help in the institution. Peter who was with Domi offered basic welding skills to teachers and learners. For sure their volunteering/ donations will always remain in our hearts. This year as I write this blog, Domi is around and it’s good to see her participate in teaching while Peter is offering welding skills to learners and teachers. &n ..read more

After a visit to Mikoroshoni Primary School in Shanzu where The Carr-Deed Family from Manchester first met Lawrence and his very young mother Esther, life did change for him. They quickly realised Lawrence needed urgent medical help as he had a very severe form of spina bifida with the sac outside the base of the spine. Esther and the family could not care for him, medical costs were beyond their means and the environment was not suitable for a disabled baby so they asked for him to be placed at The GLO. Lawrence arrived on 27th July 2010 aged 3 months old, he needed surgery immediately and we ..read more

By Patrick Fadhili – Class 8 SBM School I vividly remember this day very well, 9th of September, 2023. We had been waiting for this day with zeal and zest. I woke up from my bed and had a glimpse through the window on what was outside. The blazing sun was flickering its rays and made the dew on the grass shine brightly like pieces of mirror exposed to direct sunlight. I quickly rushed to the bathroom in a dint of a second. I was as fresh as a daisy. I put on my ironed school uniform and indeed looked like spick and span. I went downstairs and had a light breakfast. My mother gave me some pocke ..read more

In effort to rewrite the story of disability, Hattie’s House Therapy Centre uses different holistic approaches to bring a positive impact in the lives of children with disability and their families. One of these approaches includes collaborating with myriad of stakeholders such as health facilities and learning institutions that work closely with different communities.   Earlier this summer, our team including 2 social workers, 1 occupational therapist, 2 special needs teachers, and the operations manager visited Bomani dispensary and North Coast medical training college for a bench mark ..read more

It all started in 2011 when I took a group of Sixth Formers to volunteer at the Good Life Orphanage.6 trips later and I’m still coming back for more! Now retired, I have my lovely husband Peter to share these very precious times. Volunteering at the GLO is such an amazing experience and so rewarding. It’s not just about the little things we accomplish whilst we are there but the wonderful human contacts we have built over the years that make us come back each year. This year we set off on New Year’s Day and spent 3 months with our GLO family. This time felt extra special having been away for ..read more

By Lucky Lewa – Social Worker One of the major tasks the social work department yearly is the intake of the new tailoring trainees to join the GLO Vocational Training Section. This year, this activity took us three days to complete. We had received 20 applications and we needed a maximum of 16 trainees to join our excellent teacher Zuhuru in our O’Gara Sewing Room. After a busy time we finalised the vetting procedure and chose 16 new students. Here is a short background on two of the lucky applicants. Emmanuel Maitha was born in Mtepeni village on 12 th June 2002. He is the first born in a fa ..read more

As more of our GLO children return to living in the community with their extended families we are blessed to have wonderful sponsors who continue to support them financially and as a result our staff can offer an excellent support network for them. When Shainuru and her brother Nuru arrived with us in March 2014 they had been through a very unsettled period in their young lives but quickly adjusted to being part of O’Malley House Family. Since they have returned to their extended family both children have settled in really well but need that extra help to make their lives more comfortable. Bo ..read more
