I want to learn broderie anglaise I have been using Broderie Anglaise to create the delicate and intricate details of corals. This beautiful and historical technique can be used in other projects too, including creating intricate embellishments on clothing and upholstery. It can also be used as a way of ‘hiding’ holes too! I’m delighted to share that my in-person Broderie Anglaise class will be going ahead at Yarning Hearts in Singapore on 21st April. This full day masterclass will take you through the basics of Broderie Anglaise from creating eyelets to stems, and finally learning how ..read more

Poetic Medicine & Meditative Stitch

English literature wasn't my forte at school. I did not enjoy the poetry we studied. In fact, I can’t remember any of the poems we read. The only works that I can recall from the class were not poetry-related: Far from the Madding Crowd (which I have grown to love), and Macbeth. I did not particularly enjoy English literature because we had exams, and there were certain rules regarding how to interpret the works. It really put me off reading in my teens. I had this view until I met John Fox, a Poetic Medicine practitioner, from the US. He completely changed my perspective! I was not exp ..read more

Best Sewing Machine for Free Motion Embroidery
Agy Textile Artist

I get asked this question quite a lot during my free motion embroidery workshops and on social media. My answer is, it really depends. I have two machines which I use for all my works. My Singer 1100, which is now more than 15 years old, and still going strong. And my secondhand Bernina 1001 sewing machine, which I recently got at Ghim Soon. I am very happy with both of them, as they meet the requirements for my art work. I do have one sewing machine on standby, which is the Singer 2259 which I got at the last minute when the foot pedal of my Singer 1100 refused to work. The only reason ..read more

Getting a ‘new’ sewing machine

Sewing Machine Down! Do you have a favourite tool in your studio? Mine is the sewing machine - I have been using the SINGER 1100 for over 15 years now, and it has been my most trustworthy tool in my textile art journey. Just last year, however, the foot pedal refused to work and I was in a bit of a panic as I was preparing for my show. As it was so last minute, I ended up getting a very basic Singer sewing machine from my neighborhood mall just for the foot pedal - yes, that’s what I did! So, at the end of 2023 I had two sewing machines. The new Singer is a 2259. Yes, it is extremely li ..read more

January Textile Experiments

Concrete casting Since experimenting with concrete and embroidery, and creating the coral fossils, I’ve decided to go a step further and explore more sculptural techniques with the 2 media. It’s been very slow mainly because the weather in Singapore was awful - we had a couple of weeks where it was raining non-stop. This means the concrete couldn’t set quickly. On sunny days (30 degrees celsius), the concrete will set within 3 days, but this time it was at least a week. I think I have managed to get a clay like consistency so I can manipulate it with my fingers, but it still needs a bit ..read more

A Collaborative Textile Art Exhibition with Stitch Meditation

I enjoy stitching by hand a lot. There is a very calming and meditative effect that it produces. Every time the needle goes through the fabric, and you slowly pull it through with the thread, all my worries seem to melt away. This process was coined “stitch meditation” by Liz Kettle. Others call it zen stitching, or stitch yoga. Whatever the term, the process of creating stitches without rules is a very therapeutic one. This activity has helped me slow down, and is part of my artistic journey in helping me observe what is around me. Stitch Meditation Involving the Community In the last ..read more
