Hi all, I'm hoping you can help me with a UK tax question because I don't speak accountant :D The Context: I earn real close to 100k and my job has asked me to do some additional work that would end up with me earning roughly 1.5K extra a year. I also have a son going to nursery and because I'm currently under that 100k salary I get the government tax-free childcare scheme. But that extra money will put me over that 100k limit and financially put me in a much harder position. My work has a pension scheme which they describe as "a ‘relief at source’ scheme, meaning that the basic rate of tax r ..read more

Looking for advice. I noticed that the interest rates are around ~6%, currently locked in at 7.5%. Looking to deduct my monthly payment, is this difference worth shooting for or should I wait for it possibly go lower? submitted by /u/yamaha9696 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Student Loan Repayment. Should I pay it all in one lump sum?

I have a Plan 1 student loan, interest rate on my most recent statement was 6.25% (Sept 2023 -March 2024) and have £14,195.91 remaining. Approximately £168 is taken from my account monthly, and around £74 interest. Should I dip in to my savings and pay it off in one lump sum? The interest rates seem high. I have savings of around £83k and earn £50k. I can save approximately £400-500 per month and have no other debt apart from the student loan For background, I am in my late 30s and currently renting with my boyfriend but plan to eventually buy a property. If I pay off my loan, my plan would b ..read more

Roth Conversion - Living Overseas, Taking Foreign Tax Credit

I live in Germany. Am an American citizen so get to file a US tax return every year. The wife and I have roughly $200k in traditional IRAs a from our time in the US. We make about $190k here in Germany, depending on the exchange rate, and when filing our US taxes, we take the foreign tax credit so that we can still max out our Roth IRAs every year (FEIE would make contributions to the IRA a no-go, we understand). I never have to pay US taxes because my income tax rate in Germany is higher than in the US. I always get a refund from the Child Tax Credit (last year, $3200 because two kids). Ques ..read more

Double car payments through the month

Hello! I decided to pay my car off twice in a month. My monthly payment is 257 . I’ve been paying $160 semi monthly(5th and 20th) , I don’t get paid bi weekly. Anyways I paid 160 on the 5th and my second payment is coming up and in total both payments equal 320. But now my amount due is 194. I know interests adds up everyday but is it really logical to pay twice a month if now at the end of the month I’m owing more than I intended to pay? Like how is it that I’m paying 160 twice a month (=320) but somehow my minimum payment is now 194. In total I’m paying 354 instead of the 320 a month. Someo ..read more

Should I finance my next car purchase?

I’m currently in the market for a used car as a secondary vehicle. I paid for my current car outright, but sometimes I regret that decision, especially considering it cost me $33,000. I could have invested that money instead. Now, I’m looking at cars in the $16,000 range and wondering if it’s worth financing $8,000 while investing the rest. Also, would financing raise my credit score in the future? I know in the short term it will probably hurt my score, but if I make consistent on time payments will that help raise it eventually? (Currently at 740). I’m open to any other ideas or tips you mi ..read more

Thoughts on selling current home

I just got married looking at buying another home with the wife. Own my current home at 2.75. Don't know if should sell or rent my current home. I don't mind the hassle of renting it out but also wouldnt mind selling and paying off all our debts and starting fresh. I think long term it would probably pay off to rent first home and keep that cash flow. But man leave of mind having no debt right now sounds nice. I think it is basically immediate pleasure vs long term but let me know your thoughts. Will try to be as open as I can submitted by /u/HungryHoustonian32 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Can’t come into the branch Chase!

Been locked out of online banking (thus my account) for years. Live outside the US and cant get back there in the foreseeable future. Chase insists my only option is to come into a branch to verify my identity or - get this - have the branch manager who opened my account verify it for me. I opened the account about 15 years ago in a Washington Mutual branch in NYC! No chance of finding him and he wouldn’t remember me in any case. I can prove my identity in a multitude of ways if given the chance by a human - but the helpline bots wont have it. Tried filing a complaint with CFPB, but Chase Exe ..read more

Advice on making the most of my income

I’m a 22 y/o registered nurse. I make about $90k and I’m getting my step increase along with my RN II raise for having a year of experience now so I should be making around $100k after those. Im also planning on going back to school soon to become a nurse practitioner, the program is part-time so I don’t have to stop working. I’m not great at finances and I was raised in a lower-middle class family so having a lot isn’t what I’m used to either, so I just want advice on what I can do now to build wealth? submitted by /u/Excellent_Gate4219 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more
