I've recently moved all of my brokerage/retirement accounts out of EJ. I still have a 529 account in there. My understanding is that EJ charged me up front to put that money in there. They charge nothing after that. I will not be using them to put money in going forward, but I was wanting to know if it would cost me any money to leave what is already in there? I was encouraged, by my advisor, to move it into a bright smart account (Illinois). I plan on using that method going forward but I don't want to incur another closed account fee from them if I don't have to. I know that will happen whe ..read more

Unclaimed property- deceased (2011) - discovery (2024)

This is probably not the usual estate/probate/not sure how to categorize this - situation. Recently contacted by funeral home who provided services for deceased (2011) when he passed away. He and my mom were divorced when I was just a child and I’ve not had any contact with him since that time or any time up to his death. I grew up across the street from the funeral home who are extended family and knew us (me and my mom) as neighbors. While I no longer live in that area or state, they know how to contact me. As the daughter and only surviving next of kin, funeral home reached out to me conce ..read more

Divorce and Pension Split

Is there any way to make an agreement on pensions before you get married that is enforceable? My scenario: I’m 21 years into a job which I’ll get a pension at 25. If the pension is $3500 a month, If I get married tomorrow and divorce in 4 years, I don’t want someone to get a retirement benefit for life if we divorce, which has happened. I don’t have an issue with a single reasonable payout but it took me a long time to get vested, they didn’t earn the lifetime payment, I did by sticking it out 25 years. My contribution during that time would be somewhere around $25,000 but I’ve seen cases whe ..read more

Buying a condo and I have some questions about paying extra towards principle

Hello and thank you for reading my post. As the title states I'm buying a condo and had some questions and thoughts that I would like some input on. $172000 condo 20% down ($34400) Total loan: $137600 Interest rate: 7.5% 30 yr Monthly payment towards principle $980 Insurance $200 Hoa $400 Take home: $8000 Here is my question, would it be a good idea for me to pay an extra $1000 every month towards principle? From other readings I've done it's suggested to put money into investments because return is higher than mortgage interest. But with my interest being so high, is there a point to put it ..read more

Bank Account Beneficiary question

My Uncle recently passed and my Aunt was named the Beneficiary months ago, however we recently found out that the beneficiary was only put under the checking account and not under the savings or CD account even tho they are all under the same name. Would this cause trouble for my Aunt? would she have to go through probate? or would they be able to join all the money into the account that had her as beneficiary? submitted by /u/Bowser689 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Paying back a 401k loan (question)

Outside of whether or not it's a good idea. I was wondering how it works to pay the loan back. If I were to take a loan out on say 25% of my current 401k holdings. Am I then paying back that sum with my regular payroll deductions until it's payed off. Plus the interest I also owe from taking the loan? I'm just trying to get an idea if I'd need to seek out making payments or if it would come directly from my paycheck assuming I still have the same place of employment until it's payed off. submitted by /u/Significant_Map2061 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Sell investments or just leave sitting there?

Hey everyone! I am 17, almost 18, and have been investing since I was 14 under my parents name. Mostly VOO and IXUS. Up until recently, I only invested around $1,000 a year, but I’ve managed to land a pretty well paying job for my age and have built up 15k in an HYSA and roughly ~4k in stocks. As soon as I turn 18, I plan to open a Roth IRA and max that out with what I have in the HYSA as I’m still putting roughly $2,500 a month in the HYSA, so there will be plenty left. Being that I’m turning 18 soon, I’ve been exploring the best options for transferring the investments to my name. Unfortuna ..read more

A little setup: My sibling and I both live on our own now (both mid 20s) and our parents (both mid 50s) have only rented since they felt forced to quickly their house in 2008 due to finances and a financially related move to another state. They had only been paying on that house for a few years when they sold it I believe. My dad has a 401k but my mom does not, my dad intends for his 401k to serve both of them in retirement. My parents are trying to buy a house again after only renting for the majority of my life. My parents have told me before that they have low credit scores (I don't know t ..read more

Transferring out of Edward Jones

Hi r/personalfinance! I have a question about transferring my account out of Edward Jones to Vanguard instead. Currently, I have about $27k in an Edward Jones Single 1 Select account, all in PCOXX. I'm assuming this 27k has been sitting in a taxable brokerage account for over 1.5 years at this point, only in a money market. My question is how do I go about moving this over to Vanguard? What kind of account is an Edward Jones Single 1 Select? For reference, I already have a taxable brokerage account and Roth IRA through Vanguard. I am looking to consolidate all my assets through one brokerage ..read more
