Hi folks, new to the soccer coaching world and wondering how you all have dealt with useless co-coaches. I wouldn’t have signed up if I knew I would be doing this basically solo. The kids are 4, and I’m struggling. submitted by /u/Jecaho [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Dealing with a parent on the opposite team

I had a parent on the opposite team come yell at me for touching their child. Story: I was coaching my child's u8 rec team and we were taking the starting kickoff. Thier striker was inside the circle standing over my striker at kick off center line. I told him he needed to be outside the circle at the kick off. I said it a couple of times and was ignored. I walked on to the field and I told him he needed to be on the other side of the center circle. That is my only interaction with players on the other team. I wouldn't start the game until he was out of the circle. I don't really remember tou ..read more

Hi, me again ? Parks and rec U10 coach. We’re nearing the end of the season. We have two Saturday games left and I’ll be missing the last one due to a vacation (normally our season ends the first week of June, but it was unexpectedly shortened this year) Feeling a little burnt out and I know there’s not a ton we’re going to be able to change in the next two weeks. So I’m looking for your favorite soccer games/drills that are easy and fun and don’t take a ton of explanation because my kids have short attention spans these days. And god forbid anyone have to wait in line for 30 seconds ?My go t ..read more

Rec Coach Perspective

I'd like some additional perspective from rec parents and rec coaches on something that happened this past weekend with my 10U girls team. This post is very long, so please, bear with me. I started coaching 6 seasons ago and at the time my plan was that I would play the girls in specific positions as time would go on (they were 8U at the time). This continued into my first 7v7 9U season - I had thought that the same 3-4 girls playing defense full time would work best and the same goalie or possibly 2 would work best. I then went through the Grassroots program about a year ago for 4v4 and 7v7 ..read more

Defending against an Elite Striker??

Hi All looking for advice for my U13 Girls travel team. We moved on in our state cups and in our upcoming semifinal game this week, we will play a team with an extremely talented striker. She is very fast and has great ball skills. She uses her speed to both create from over the top as well as just running past defenders. My girls mostly play a 4-4-2 with a diamond midfield but we are comfortable switching and with play a few variations in formation. I am thinking of taking my fastest fullback and having her play DM and marking the striker man to man. Thoughts on this? What are some things yo ..read more

What is your “game changer” for U8 or U9?

What I’m wanting to know is what is something that you have learned that was a real game changer for your team? This doesn’t have to mean it equal wins, but it’s something that you did that improved your team. I coach a U9 girls rec league team, we can practice 1x week. We have 14 (!) players n our roster. Probably the thing this season that made an immediate impact was making substitutions every 6 minutes. We play 7v7 with 2 - 25 minute halves. In previous seasons, and at the beginning of this season, I would treat each half like two quarters and sub the girls in and out at 12 minutes to ens ..read more

Ending another season without a win

We’re coming to the end of my second season coaching U10 coed rec league. Last season was rough, we were consistently being annihilated every game. This season we’re still losing, but we’ve often scored the first goals and the games have been much closer! Overall, I know I coach well and fairly and give my kids equal field time and the opportunity to play whatever position they want to try. I’ve seen huge improvements in every single player. One little girl has even taken some shots on goal in the last couple games when in the beginning of the season she barely moved on the field. My own daug ..read more

Season Recap 8u boys

Team started 1-1-2. After: 6-1-1 In the tournament we missed the finals after being even on all tie breakers (GD, shutouts, head to head, GA). PKs were done 15 minutes before the tournament final to determine which team went. We lost. Kids cried but proud of them. I made some big mistakes this season. At times had parents upset. Sometimes lost my cool. But damn, kids grew individually and as a unit. And so did I. For the tournament, we made some dramatic changes. I sat my stars to start matches and my other players responded powerfully. I learned a lesson in that. I made equal time on field a ..read more
